Patrick Cowdell

Patrick Cowdell (born August 18, 1953 in Smethwick ) is a retired British boxer .

In 1974 Cowdell won the Commonwealth Games in the bantamweight (-54 kg) . At the European Championships in the following year, he took third place behind Viktor Rybakow , Soviet Union , and Zatscho Andrejkowski, Bulgaria . In 1976 Cowdell took part in the Olympic Games and reached the semi-finals after victories over Leszek Borkowski, Poland (5: 0), Alejandro Silva, Puerto Rico (5: 0), and Reynaldo Fortaleza, Philippines (4: 1). In this he faced the later Olympic champion Gu Yong-ju , North Korea , to whom he was defeated by 4: 1 judges' votes and thus ended the tournament with a bronze medal.

In 1977 Cowdell turned pro. In his career that lasted until 1988, he won the British championship and the European championship in featherweight and super featherweight. His biggest fight was a challenge from WBC world champion Salvador Sánchez , to whom he was defeated in 1981 after 15 rounds by split decision (146: 140; 148: 137; 144: 145). A second world championship fight ended for Cowdell in 1985 against Azumah Nelson in the first round. He played 42 fights as a professional, of which he won 36 (18 KO's).
