TUI Cruises GmbH is a German cruise company based in Hamburg . Founded in April 2008, is a joint venture of TUI AG and Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. , the second largest cruise line in the world. The first ship in the fleet was Mein Schiff 1 , which entered service as Mein Schiff in May 2009 and decommissioned in 2018. The second ship is called Mein Schiff 2 (now Mein Schiff Herz ) and started its voyage in May 2011. Since 2014, TUI Cruises has taken over six newbuildings from the shipbuilding company STX Finland and its successor Meyer Turku Oy . Three more new buildings are to be put into service by 2026.

Companies

history

TUI Cruises is the youngest cruise brand on the German-speaking market. Wybcke Meier (chairwoman) and Frank Kuhlmann are the managing directors. After it was founded, TUI Cruises did not want to wait the three years necessary to build a new ship to enter the market, which is why the company bought the cruise ship Celebrity Galaxy from the shipping company Celebrity Cruises , also a subsidiary of Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. Also Mein Schiff 2 , the former Celebrity Mercury comes from the fleets of Celebrity Cruises and was rebuilt in early 2011 for 50 million euros. The TUI Cruises offering positions itself in the segment of premium cruises between club and traditional cruises as a 4½-star product.

TUI Cruises entered the charter business in summer 2017. For this purpose, the Splendor of the Seas was taken over by Royal Caribbean and chartered to the TUI subsidiary Thomson Cruises in order to be marketed in Great Britain. This is the beginning of the internationalization of TUI Cruises, which also want to become active in other markets. Furthermore, the Mein Schiff 1 and Mein Schiff 2 were replaced by new buildings in 2018 and 2019. The Mein Schiff 1 joined Marella Cruises , the Mein Schiff 2 was in my heart ship renamed and continue riding in the My ship fleet will.

In February 2020, TUI announced the sale of Hapag-Lloyd Kreuzfahrten to TUI Cruises, in which TUI and Royal Caribbean Cruises each hold 50% of the shares.

Flagging out, taxation and employees

TUI Cruises had all of its ships entered in the Maltese ship register. The island state of Malta maintains by flagging u. a. Europe's largest merchant marine of cruise ships . Malta's tax, environmental and labor law regulations therefore also apply on TUI Cruises' ships. Malta does not levy sales tax on all sales on board its fleet. In 2015, TUI generated around EUR 650 million in sales of EUR 126.5 million before taxes. Of this profit, in turn, only EUR 63,787.75 corporation tax was paid to German tax offices, which corresponds to a tax rate of 0.05%.

The approximately 360 employees at the Hamburg headquarters work in the areas of ship operations and guest service, sales, sales, marketing, communications, controlling and finance, as well as capacity management. TUI Cruises' entertainment division is based in Berlin. The crew on board the Mein Schiff Herz consists of approx. 780 people. On the Mein Schiff 3 to My ship 6 each about 1,000 crew members use. Around 1100 people each work on board the Mein Schiff 1 and Mein Schiff 2 , which means that a total of around 6,980 crew members work for TUI Cruises.

German labor law, such as the minimum wage , does not apply to employees - the wages and salaries are “well below Central European standards.” Some employees at the lowest salary level, such as laundry workers, would have an hourly rate of less than EUR 2.40. A cabin steward still earns less than double that. While the TUI press office argued in a Spiegel Online article that living and working on board, for example, hardly incurred any additional costs, a union representative assessed the work situation as follows:

“The enormous profit margins in the cruise industry are made possible not least by wage and social dumping of employees. All over the world, in the cruise industry, we repeatedly observe glaring fee conditions that are far from an acceptable minimum. This mainly affects low-skilled employees in the hotel and catering sector. "

environmental Protection

All TUI ships run on the heavy oil fuel Bunker C (DIN ISO 8217 with distillates ). In 2018, NABU mentioned positively that TUI Cruises and its competitor Hapag-Lloyd Cruises are using nitrogen oxide catalysts in the younger ships and are at least equipped to provide shore power during port operations. No TUI ship has particle filters to reduce the particularly harmful soot particles .

TUI Cruises has been a member of Futouris e. V., a non-profit association that acts as a sustainability initiative for the tourism industry . Essentially, TUI Cruises plans to use the sustainability initiative to promote environmental protection projects. For example, TUI Cruises has been supporting the non-profit SECORE Foundation with coral protection since May 2013 .

New buildings

On September 27, 2011, TUI Cruises announced that the Finnish shipyard STX Finland had received an order to build another cruise ship, the Mein Schiff 3 . The 295 meter long ship has 1253 cabins. 82% of the cabins have a balcony or veranda, the employee / guest ratio corresponds to that of the other ships in the fleet. It entered service in 2014. The first sister ship, Mein Schiff 4 , was ordered in autumn 2012 and put into service in May 2015.

At the beginning of August 2014, Mein Schiff 5 and Mein Schiff 6 were ordered under reserve from Meyer Turku Shipyard Oy, formerly STX Finland, and were delivered in 2016 and 2017. At the same time as the Mein Schiff 5 and Mein Schiff 6 were ordered in September 2014, an option for two further ships was agreed, which was converted into a firm order in July 2015. Initially, these newbuildings should be named Mein Schiff 7 and Mein Schiff 8 , but since these newbuildings are to replace the previous Mein Schiff 1 and Mein Schiff 2 , which will change to Thomson Cruises , it was decided that the newbuilds should be named Mein Schiff 1 and My ship 2 will be preserved. The ships were delivered in 2018 and 2019. In February 2018, another new ship, Mein Schiff 7 , was Template: future / in 3 yearsordered for delivery in 2023 .

In July 2018, two LNG- powered newbuildings measured at 161,000 GT were ordered from Fincantieri with delivery in 2024 and 2026.

criticism

In December 2011, the President of TUI Cruises , Richard Vogel, was awarded the negative Dinosaur of the Year prize alongside Michael Thamm from AIDA Cruises .

“Their supposedly 'white fleets' are in truth dirty soot spinners, because the cruise ships still use toxic heavy fuel on the high seas . This means that a single ocean liner emits as many pollutants on a cruise as five million cars on the same route. The dangers to the environment and human health could easily be avoided, but out of greed for profit, German shipowners have so far refused to use marine diesel and to install exhaust technology such as soot particle filters . "

The NABU's criticism was criticized by the ship technology expert Holger Watter of the Flensburg University of Applied Sciences , who accused the NABU of incorrect calculations.

“A modern cruise ship consumes no more than a third of the energy of a small car per person transported. The Nabu theses are wrong and one-sided. Apparently, the environmentalists are more interested in a campaign than a sound factual analysis and assessment. Once again, apples were compared with pears, that is, a ship that moves around the clock and carries 2600 passengers with a parked car. "

- Professor Holger Watter, expert for sustainable energy systems and ship operation technology at the Flensburg University of Applied Sciences

A Nabu expert admitted weaknesses in NABU's argumentation.

Animal rights activists criticized TUI Cruises for their landings in the Faroe Islands , where hundreds of pilot whales and other species of dolphins are bloodily killed during driven hunts in public beach areas, which also include Mein Schiff's landing ports . TUI Cruises therefore decided not to visit the Faroe Islands from 2019.
