Kemmel is a small village in the municipality of Heuvelland ( West Flanders Province ) in Belgium .

During the First World War the place was badly destroyed. Kemmelberg , 1.5 km southwest of the village, was a strategically important military point and accordingly fiercely contested. During the Fourth Battle of Flanders on April 7, 1918, German troops took the remains of the village and the Kemmelberg on April 25.

In later years in the German Empire , therefore, streets (e.g. Kemmel private road ) and barracks were named after Kemmel.
