Antonio Alfonseca (born April 16, 1972 in La Romana , Dominican Republic ) is a Dominican baseball player. He played in the Major League from 1997 to 2007 as a relief pitcher for the Florida Marlins , Chicago Cubs , Atlanta Braves , Texas Rangers and Philadelphia Phillies . He won the World Series with the Marlins in 1997 and the title of Best Relief Pitchers in 2000 ("MLB Relief Man of the Year"). He currently plays for the Bridgeport Bluefish , a professional team in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball .

Alfonseca has the nickname "El Pulpo" (English: the octopus ) because it has six fingers on its hands due to polydactyly . From a baseball point of view, his throwing hand is neither an advantage nor a disadvantage because the extra little finger does not touch the ball when throwing it. Alfonseca, in whose family polydactyly is widespread, carries his twelve fingers with pride and considers them a family symbol.
