Bodyflying or indoor skydiving is a training option for skydivers, but also an independent sport . In a vertical wind tunnel , wind speeds of usually around 180–220 km / h are artificially generated, which roughly corresponds to the average speed of fall of a human body in air. In modern systems, however, up to 270 km / h can be achieved. This makes it possible to fly and train in all freefly body positions.

Historical

In 1979, the Canadian Jean Saint-Germain, a former army parachutist and operator of several parachute schools, set out to construct a vertical wind tunnel as a training aid for his students, which should make it possible to train free fall in parachuting more efficiently and cost-effectively. This form of skydiving training , which he carried out in a so-called aerodium, spread over the entire globe in the following years, was increasingly technically and methodically further developed and inspired the new sport known as 'bodyflying' :

In 1991, in Rümlang / Canton of Zurich, Switzerland, a small Aerodium was created that enabled anyone interested, but also professional skydivers on a commercial basis, to float on a stream of air with their bare bodies and to try out artistic forms of movement. In the summer of 2005 a vertical wind tunnel was also opened in Eastern Europe , in the Latvian city of Sigulda . Thanks to their spectacular efforts at the closing ceremonies of the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin , a very broad public gained knowledge of the unusual sport of bodyflying. And when the Latvians presented a bodyflying installation with regular attractive shows in their pavilion at the Expo 2010 in Shanghai / China in 2010 , they became a crowd puller. The further technical development of the wind tunnel facilities in 2013 made it possible to practice another sport, base jumping, indoors, in which the athlete not only jump into the wind stream from the ground, but also from a height of 15 meters and so do a fall of a building, for example. In 2017, a huge wind tunnel was finally built, which was named Peryton. It was used by actor Tom Cruise to train for his appearance in the sixth episode of Mission: Impossible with the title Mission: Impossible - Fallout .

Flight technique

To fly freely, bodyflying requires at least an air flow with a speed that compensates for the speed of fall of the body. This wind speed of more than 180 km / h is generated by a generator and a huge propeller and driven vertically upwards through a grille in a tower-like, open-topped room. After a little practice, the resulting wind tunnel enables active flying with a change in altitude and artistic body movements.

In Siegbert A. Warwitz is a description of the equipment and technology, the Body Flyers moved with this air flow: The athlete can be equipped with helmet, goggles, masks, gloves and especially with a special suit from a raised edge of the aerodium slide onto the air stream. Depending on the level of performance, there are different design options for active flying: “While beginners still have to be content with the pleasure of hovering, other elements of flying are already open to advanced users. The floating height can be regulated by increasing or decreasing the area of the body exposed to the flow and thus changing the use of wind pressure. By moving sideways and shifting weight, turns, somersaults and twists are possible. Landing takes place by exiting the air stream. "
