history

In 1938 there was a gliding school of the Gliding Association of Railway Workers of Poznan near Rzadkowo . This was reactivated on a larger scale after the Second World War . At the end of the 1940s they were looking for a new airfield and found it in Strzyżewice. The nationally owned property (PGR) in the community ceded 90 hectares for the construction of an airfield. On May 1, 1952, the Strzyżewice School of Gliding was opened. Part of the square is on urban land. Several world champions have emerged from the school.

World championships in gliding took place here in 1958, 1968, 1999, 2003, 2014 and 2013 for the juniors. European championships were flown out in 1990, 1998, 1995 for juniors and 1999 for women. In 1958 Ernst Günter Haase became the first German world glider champion after Heini Dittmar in 1937.

World championships in hot air ballooning took place here in 2014 for women. European championships were held in 1988 for men and 2017 for women.
