The Harmony of the Seas is a cruise ship operated by Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. and was the largest cruise ship from 2016 to 2018. The ship was handed over to the shipping company on May 12, 2016. It is a slightly enlarged sister ship of the Oasis of the Seas and the Allure of the Seas .

history

On October 25, 2012, Royal Caribbean announced the construction of a third Oasis- class ship . On December 27, 2012, the ship was commissioned from STX France , based in Saint-Nazaire , after negotiations with the shipyard STX Finland had failed. The construction of the ship began on September 23, 2013, the keel was laid on May 9, 2014 and put into service on May 20, 2016. On February 1, 2015, the partially completed shell of the third class ship was relocated from dry dock A to the deeper dry dock B of the STX France shipyard. The Harmony of the Seas is 2.15 meters longer and 5.5 meters wider than her two sister ships. The ship is capable of accommodating 6,780 passengers in 2,747 cabins, 484 more passengers than its two older sister ships.

In February 2015, Royal Caribbean announced that the new ship would be named Harmony of the Seas . On June 19, 2015, the ship was undocked and moved to Basin C. On March 10, 2016, the ship set out for its first test voyage at sea. Another test run began on April 21, 2016. The Harmony of the Seas was delivered to Royal Caribbean on May 12, 2016. Three days later the ship left Saint-Nazaire for Southampton. From there, the Harmony of the Seas began its maiden voyage on May 22nd and then set course for its base port of Barcelona . On November 10, 2016, the Harmony of the Seas was christened in Fort Lauderdale .

In May 2014, Royal Caribbean announced that it was commissioning another sister ship with the same dimensions as the Harmony of the Seas . The ship, which bears the name Symphony of the Seas , entered service in 2018.

Furnishing

At the stern there is a 30 meter high symmetrical pair of dry slides . The Ultimate Abyss starts 47 meters above the waterline on deck 16 above the Aqua Theater. There are 2,747 cabins on 18 decks on board.

Hull and drive technology

In the Harmony of the Seas one is air lubrication system (Air Lubrication System) installed. A veil of air bubbles is pressed under the ship's bottom to reduce drag. In conjunction with other measures, the Harmony of the Seas should be up to 20 percent more efficient than the sister ships that were previously delivered, according to the operator. The main engine system consists of three sixteen-cylinder marine diesel engines from Wärtsilä with 18,860 kW each and three twelve-cylinder marine diesel engines from the same manufacturer with 13,860 kW each for the integrated electric drive . Two MTU diesel engines are on board as emergency power generators . As fuel is heavy oil used, a sulfur scrubber (scrubber) is used to adhere to sulfur emission limits that are prescribed in ports and coastal areas of the EU and the United States. Analysts put the daily fuel requirement at at least 150 tons, the pollutant emissions at about five tons of nitrogen oxides and 450 kg of fine dust .

Incidents

An accident occurred in the port of Marseille on September 13, 2016 . Apparently, during a rescue exercise, a lifeboat manned by five crew members came loose from the holding device and fell from a height of about ten meters onto the water. One person was killed and four seriously injured in the impact.

On December 24, 2018, a 20-year-old, who was part of the ship's crew as a singer and dancer of the musical crew, fell from the ship into the Atlantic and has been missing since then.

A few weeks later, on January 11, 2019, a 16-year-old passenger crashed onto the pier while trying to get into his cabin via the balcony at a stopover of the ship on the Haitian peninsula Labadee and suffered fatal injuries.

Sister ships

The Harmony of the Seas is the third ship in the Oasis class. So far, four Oasis- class ships have been put into service. The names are: "Oasis of the Seas", "Allure of the Seas", "Symphony of the Seas".
