The Empress of the Seas is a Royal Caribbean International cruise ship that entered service in 1990 as the Nordic Empress . After having been in service as the Empress for Pullmantur Cruises since 2008 , it returned to service for Royal Caribbean International in May 2016.
history
The ship was ordered by Admiral Cruises and should be put into service as Future Seas . The Nordic Empress was built under construction number G29 at Chantiers de l'Atlantique in Saint-Nazaire and launched on August 25, 1989. The ship's godmother was Gloria Estefan . After the takeover by Royal Caribbean, which Admiral Cruises had taken over in 1988, on May 31, 1990, the Nordic Empress was put into service on June 25, 1990 for cruises from Miami to the Caribbean . From 1999 the ship was also in service between New York and the Bahamas .
In May 2004 the Nordic Empress was modernized and renamed Empress of the Seas . It was the last ship of the shipping company that had not yet had an Of the Seas in its name.
After another four years in the service of the shipping company, the Empress of the Seas went in March 2008 as Empress to the shipping company Pullmantur Cruises, which also belongs to Royal Caribbean. From then on, the ship was used for cruises in the Mediterranean .
In November 2012, the Empress was the first Pullmantur unit to receive a new hull painting. The previously completely white ship with a red funnel was given a blue hull and funnel as well as the shipping company's new company logo.
In October 2015, the Empress was announced to return to service for Royal Caribbean. In spring 2016, the ship was renamed Empress of the Seas again and completely modernized. The first trip, originally planned for March 30, 2016, had to be postponed to April 25 and finally to May 28, 2016 due to delays in the renovation. Since then, the Empress of the Seas has been in service in the Caribbean as the shipping company's oldest and smallest ship.
