The Fantasia class is a series of post-Panamax cruise ships operated by the shipping company MSC Crociere SA and built at the French shipyard STX France Cruise SA (formerly: Chantiers de l'Atlantique ) in Saint-Nazaire . With a measurement of around 140,000 GT, the Fantasia class is one of the largest cruise ship construction classes in the world and was only used by the Freedom (approx. 155,000 GT) and Oasis class (approx. 225,000 GT) ships during the construction period . as well as the Queen Mary 2 and the Norwegian Epic .

history

The keel of the type ship with hull number A33 was laid on April 11, 2007 at the STX France Cruise SA shipyard in Saint-Nazaire . The technical launch of the new building - floating in the construction dock - took place on February 14, 2008. After the test drives had been completed at the end of October 2008, the MSC Fantasia was handed over to the owner on December 10, 2008 as the shipping company's new flagship in Saint-Nazaire.

Even before the first steel plate for the second ship was cut on April 12, 2007 - at the same time as the keel was laid for the type ship - MSC Crociere announced that it would change the name of the new building from MSC Serenata to MSC Splendida . The reason given was the enthusiastic reaction of Raphaela Aponte, wife of the shipowner Gianluigi Aponte, when viewing the building plans. The floatation and undocking of the MSC Splendida took place on July 20, 2008. Almost a year later, the ship was completed.

At the beginning of March 2010, MSC Crociere and STX France signed a preliminary contract for the construction of another cruise ship, which was originally to be named MSC Favolosa . Since the shipping company Costa Crociere had already given this name to the Costa Favolosa , which was completed in July 2011 , it was decided to christen the new ship with the name MSC Fantastica . As part of the traditional coinage ceremony at the shipyard in early November 2010 - after the name was changed for the third time - the final name MSC Divina was announced. After delivery, the ship will be put into service in Marseille on May 26, 2012 . Compared to the two sister ships, the passenger capacity has been increased and the equipment expanded.

The fourth ship of the Fantasia class was originally commissioned by the Libyan state shipping company GNMTC ( General National Maritime Transport Company ) under the working name "Phenicia" at the beginning of July 2010 and should be commissioned at the end of 2012. Due to the political unrest in Libya in spring 2011, GNMTC was no longer able to meet its payment obligations, whereupon STX France terminated the construction contract in June 2011. After negotiations with the shipyard, MSC Crociere announced in March 2012 that it would take over the ship and put it into service in March 2013 under the name MSC Preziosa .

Machine system and drive

The ships of the Fantasia class are equipped with diesel-electric machine systems that generate both electrical energy and process heat . They consist of five diesel generator sets. The diesel engines are medium-speed 4- stroke V-engines of the Wärtsilä 46 type . The two 16-cylinder and the three 12-cylinder engines develop a cylinder output of 1,050 kW at a speed of 514 rpm. Each motor is coupled to a three -phase generator which feeds into the high-voltage electrical system (3-phase alternating current , 11 kV, 60 Hz).

The two 5-blade fixed propellers are driven by the brushless three-phase propeller motors and shaft systems built into the fuselage . At a nominal speed of 130 rpm, the output is 20.2 MW each. By using a new generation of motors in the "MSC Divina", it was possible to increase the output of the propeller drives to 21.8 MW each at 143 rpm.

To support maneuvering at low speeds and in ports, the ships of the Fantasia class are equipped with three bow thrusters and two stern thrusters , with the "MSC Divina" having four transverse thrusters in the bow.

Furnishing

With the exception of the "MSC Divina", the ships of the Fantasia class are almost identical and offer cabin spaces for 3,274 to 3,502 ("MSC Divina") passengers on 14 publicly accessible decks, resulting in a space ratio of 42 to 39.8 GT / passenger . With maximum occupancy, over 4,000 passengers can be accommodated. The proportion of outside cabins is around 82 percent. In the case of the "MSC Divina", the share is around 76 percent. Over 40 cabins in different categories are barrier-free .

In addition to various themed bars, the ships are equipped with five restaurants, of which the main restaurant, located on two decks, offers space for over 1,100 passengers on an area of almost 2,000 square meters. The theater hall extends over three decks in the front area of the ship's hull. It is equipped with the latest stage technology and has more than 1,600 seats.

There are five swimming pools on the upper open deck , one of which can be covered with a movable roof structure. There are also 12 whirlpools .

The specialty of the Fantasia class is a separately located area in the front part of the upper deck, which is marketed by the shipping company as the "MSC Yacht Club". It is characterized by special service and high-quality equipment.
