Sir Bani Yas ( Arabic صير بني ياس, DMG Ṣīr Banī Yās ) is an island 250 km southwest of Abu Dhabi . It is located about 9 km from Jebel Dhanna . The island is about 17.5 km long and 9 km wide, and has an area of 70.53 km². This makes it the largest natural island in the United Arab Emirates .

The island's name also gave its name to the largest nature reserve in the United Arab Emirates, which was established in 1970 by Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan . During his reign, Zayid was repeatedly given exotic animals such as llamas, giraffes and antelopes, which he settled on the island. In 2015, 400 Arabian oryx , the largest herd in the world, lived on Sir Bani Yas.

In this approximately 87 km² area, a multitude of birds, trees and plants have developed into a unique ecosystem over decades , which today is often visited by tourists for excursions. Over three million trees have been planted since the reserve was opened. After Zayad's death in 2004, the island was systematically opened up to tourists. Safari tours, archery, mountain biking, climbing and diving are offered for vacationers.

Sir Bani Yas also serves as an agricultural testing laboratory. In field tests, scientists want to find out whether strawberry plants, olive and lemon trees thrive under the local conditions.

There are several historically significant sites on the island. There are cultural evidence from the Stone Age , early Islam and the foundations of a Christian monastery on Sir Bani Yas.

Tourism

MSC Cruises has its own private harbor for cruise ships with its own beach on the island.
