Mellifont ( Irish An Mhainistir Mhór ) is a small town in County Louth in the east of the Republic of Ireland .

Mellifont is located in the southwest of County Louth, right on the border with County Meath , about 7 km (as the crow flies) northwest of Drogheda .

The place became famous for the Mellifont Abbey , founded in 1142 , with which it houses the remains of the first Cistercian abbey built in Ireland .
