The Dunmore Cave ( Irish Dún Mór means "great fortress" ) is a limestone - cave in Town Country Mohil in Ballyfoyle , in County Kilkenny , Ireland .

It is a show cave and open to the public, best known for its numerous archaeological finds. It is mentioned in the Irish Triads (historical yearbooks) as early as the 9th century . It is reported there that a Viking massacre is said to have taken place near the cave in 928 .

The cave is located near the N78 (Kilkenny – Castlecomer) road about eleven kilometers north of Kilkenny City.

The over 80 m long cave is divided into five main chambers,

  • Main Chamber I + II
  • Haddon Hall, Crystal Hall and Rabbit Burrow with the source are difficult to access.

The wide entrance leads to the main chambers. From Chamber I an ascent leads to the chamber with the 'Market Cross' - a huge stalagmite in the middle of the triangular side chamber. There are other stalactites to the right and left of the chamber. The floor is covered with stalagmites.

The cave has been state-owned since 1940 and a national monument due to its historical past .
