Liam Naughten

Liam William Anthony Naughten (* the 30th May 1944 ; † 16th November 1996 ) was an Irish politician of Fine Gael .

biography

Naughten, who was originally a farmer , first became a member of the County Council of Roscommon County in 1974 . In 1981 he was elected to the Senate ( Seanad Éireann ) for the first time as a candidate for Fine Gael , where he represented the group for agriculture, livestock and fisheries, the so-called Agricultural Panel, until 1982 . Before that, he ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the House of Commons in both 1977 and 1981.

He was then elected to the House of Commons ( Dáil Éireann ) and represented in this between 1982 and his electoral defeat in 1989 the constituency of Roscommon . He then became a member of the Senate again and was a member of the Senate as a representative of the Agricultural Panel until his death.

Shortly after the election he became Vice President of the Senate ( Leas-Chathaoirleach ) on November 8, 1989 and held this office until July 11, 1995. In 1991 he was again a member of the County Council of Roscommon and was a member of this as a representative for the constituency of Athlone up to his death. In 1992 he ran in the constituency Longford Roscommon again unsuccessfully ran for a seat in the House of Commons.

Most recently Naughten was Cathaoirleach and thus President of the Senate from July 12, 1995 until his death in a road traffic accident on November 16, 1996 .

After his death, his son Denis Naughten became a member of the Senate, making him the youngest Senator in Ireland's history.
