Patrick Joseph Reynolds ( Irish Pádraig Mac Raghnaill , born November 25, 1920 in Killellan , County Leitrim , † December 27, 2003 in Ballinamore , County Leitrim) was an Irish politician of the Fine Gael .

biography

Reynolds was the son of Patrick T. Reynolds , who was a member of the House of Commons from 1927 until his shooting by a former officer of the Royal Irish Constabulary in 1932, where he represented the Cumann na nGaedheal , and of Mary Reynolds , who from 1932 to 1933 also the Cumann na nGaedheal and later from 1937 to 1961 who represented Fine Gael for the Leitrim and Sligo-Leitrim constituencies in the House of Commons.

He himself was a businessman, farmer and auctioneer . He began his political career in local politics in 1943 when he was elected a member of the County Council of County Leitrim, of which he was a member for more than forty years.

In 1961 he was elected as a candidate for Fine Gael for the first time as a member of the House of Commons ( Dáil Éireann ) and represented the constituency of Roscommon there until 1969 . In 1969 he suffered an electoral defeat as a candidate in the Roscommon-Leitrim constituency and resigned from the House of Commons. Subsequently, however, he was elected as a member of the Senate ( Seanad Éireann ) and represented there for a legislative period until 1973 the interests of the group of public administration and social institutions, the so-called Administrative Panel . In addition, he was from 1967 to 1979 chairman of the County Council of Leitrim, making his longest tenure in this role.

In the 1973 elections he was re-elected as a member of Parliament ( Teachta Dála ) and represented the constituency of Roscommon-Leitrim in the House of Commons until he was defeated again in 1977 . Prime Minister ( Taoiseach ) Liam Cosgrave appointed him Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Education and Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Public Services on December 16, 1976. He held these functions until May 25, 1977.

After leaving the House of Commons, he was re-elected Senator in 1977. Until he renounced his candidacy in 1987, he was a member of the Industry and Finance Group, the so-called Industrial and Commercial Panel .

Most recently Reynolds was from February 23, 1983 to April 25, 1987 Cathaoirleach and thus President of the Senate.

His son Gerry Reynolds was also a Senator and Teachta Dála of Fine Gael.
