Charles "Charlie" McDonald (born June 11, 1935 in Ballyroan , County Laois ) is a former Irish politician of the Fine Gael .

biography

McDonald was a farmer by profession . In 1961 he was elected for the first time as a member of the Senate ( Seanad Éireann ) and represented in this until 1973 the interest group agriculture, livestock and fisheries, the so-called Agricultural Panel . In 1969 he ran unsuccessfully as a candidate for the Fine Gael in the constituency of Laoighis-Offaly for a seat in the lower house ( Dáil Éireann ) .

In 1973 he was not only elected a member of the lower house in the Laoighis-Offaly constituency , but also a member of the European Parliament in January 1973 and March 1973 , to which he was a member until 1979. In the election for the 21st Dáil Éireann in 1977 he suffered an electoral defeat and resigned from the House of Commons, shortly afterwards he was re-elected as a representative of the Agricultural Panel as a member of the Senate and belonged to it until 1992. In the first European elections in 1979 , he ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the European Parliament in the Leinster constituency .

After he was from July 18, 1979 to August 11, 1981 Vice President of the Senate ( Leas Cathaoirleach ), he became Cathaoirleach on October 8, 1981, and thus Senate President. He held this office until May 13, 1982. After that, between May 19, 1982 and January 30, 1983, he was again Vice President of the Senate.

In the elections for Dáil Éireann in 1981, February and November 1982 and 1987, he ran again unsuccessfully for a seat in the lower house in the constituency of Laoighis-Offaly . Most recently he was from May 20, 1987 to August 15, 1989 again as Leas Cathaoirleach Vice President of the Senate.

His subsequent candidacy in the European elections in 1989 in the Leinster constituency was just as unsuccessful as his applications for re-election as a member of the Senate in 1993 and 1997.
