Rory Kiely

Rory Kiely (born May 1, 1934 in Feenagh, Kilmallock, County Limerick , † June 13, 2018 in Limerick ) was an Irish politician of the Fianna Fáil .

biography

After attending the Christian Brothers School in Charleville , he studied social and agricultural science at University College Cork and graduated with a diploma .

Kiely, who later became a farmer , was elected for the first time in 1977 as a candidate for Fianna Fáil as a member of the Senate ( Seanad Éireann ) and represented there for thirty years, with the exception of a short time between 1982 and 1983 to 2007, the group for agriculture, livestock and fisheries, the so-called Agricultural Panel . He had previously run for a seat in the Senate in 1969 without success. Between January 1998 and September 2002 he was also a deputy member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe .

Most recently, Kiely was Cathaoirleach from September 12, 2002 to September 13, 2007 and thus President of the Senate. In addition to being the trustee of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA), he has been a member of the GAA's board of directors for the province of Munster since 1982 .

Kiely died in Limerick University Hospital in June 2018 at the age of 84.
