Jackie Fahey

John "Jackie" Fahey (born January 23, 1928 in Clonmel , County Tipperary ; † March 18, 2019 ) was an Irish Fianna Fáil politician who was a member of the House of Commons ( Dáil Éireann ) between 1965 and 1992 and was temporarily Minister of State in the Ministry of the Environment.

Life

Fahey, who worked as a farmer, auctioneer and insurance broker, applied unsuccessfully as a candidate for Fianna Fáil in the elections of October 4, 1961 in the constituency of Tipperary South for a mandate in the Dáil Éireann. He only finished last among nine candidates for the four seats to be awarded in this constituency. In the elections of April 7, 1965 , he was first elected a member of the Dáil Éireann. In this he represented after his re-election on June 18, 1969 and on February 28, 1973 initially the constituency of Tipperary South . On May 9, 1970, he took over his first government office and served as Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries until March 14, 1973.

In the elections of June 16, 1977 Fahey was re-elected as a member of Dáil Éireann, but now represented after his re-elections on June 11, 1981 , February 18, 1982 , November 24, 1982 , February 17, 1987 and June 15, 1989 to on his narrow defeat in the November 25, 1992 elections, the constituency of Waterford .

Ahead of Prime Minister ( Taoiseach ) Jack Lynch's resignation as chairman of Fianna Fáil, Fahey, along with Thomas McEllistrim, Jr. , Seán Doherty , belonged to Mark Killilea. Jr. and Albert Reynolds on the so-called Gang of Five , who campaigned for the successor of Health Secretary Charles J. Haughey as Lynch's successor. After Lynch's resignation on December 5, 1979, Haughey ran for the chairman election on December 7, 1979 against the previous Vice Prime Minister ( Tánaiste ) and Minister of Finance George Colley . Haughey finally won the election with just 44 to 38 votes and was then Lynch's successor as Prime Minister on December 11, 1979. Fahey was then appointed Minister of State in the Environment Minister by Prime Minister Haughey on December 13, 1979 and held this office until the end of Haughey's first term on June 30, 1981.

In the European elections in 1989 Fahey had unsuccessfully applied for a seat in the European Parliament in the Munster constituency .
