Nenagh Castle ( Irish Caisleán an Aonaigh or Caisleán Aonach Urmhumhan ) is a tower house in the city of Nenagh in the northern part of the Irish County of Tipperary .
description
The round tower is over 30 meters high and its base diameter is 16 meters. It is one of the most beautiful round towers in Ireland. Its crenellated crown and the arched windows underneath were added in the mid-19th century. These structures do not reflect the true historical character of the castle, but established the iconic status of Nenagh Castle. It appears in many logos of local clubs and institutions, including that of the Nenagh City Council.
history
Theobald Walter , 1st Baron Butler , had the Norman donjon built around the year 1200; His son, Theobald de Botiller , had it completed around 1220. In 1861, Bishop Michael Flannery had the row of clerical windows and the crenellated crown built, because the donjon was to be the bell tower of a cathedral to be designed by Edward Pugin . However, this cathedral was never built.
From 2009 to 2013 the castle and its property were extensively restored. The aim was to establish Nenagh Castle as the area's main tourist attraction. Today the round tower is open to the public.
