Darcy Ribeiro (born October 26, 1922 in Montes Claros , Minas Gerais , † February 17, 1997 in Brasília ) was a Brazilian ethnologist , cultural theorist, politician , educator and writer .

Life

Darcy Ribeiro was one of the most important thinkers in Latin America in the 20th century. As a novelist, he has used the creative power of literature to complexly fictionalize his insights into the problems of Brazilian society. As an ethnologist, he made a name for himself through his theoretical work on the Brazilian indigenous people and his theory of long-term historical development.

From January 4, 1962 to September 19, 1962 he was founding rector of the Universidade de Brasília (UnB). Up until the military coup in 1964, he worked for years in politics and administration in Brazil, including as Minister of Education from 1962 to 1963; then he went into exile . At the beginning of the eighties he was able to return to Brazil. In 1982 he took part in the West Berlin Horizontefestival ( Horizonte - Festival of World Cultures : No. 2, 1982), which was dedicated to Latin America, where he discussed the future of his country with the future President of Brazil, Fernando Henrique Cardoso . Some time later he became minister of culture in the government of the state of Rio de Janeiro .

He summarized the state of Latin American societies ironically to Octavio Paz : “We are those who are no longer what they were without having become who we could or wanted to be. Since we don't know who we were when we were innocent in them [the Indians], knowing nothing about ourselves, we know even less who we will be. ”(Darcy Ribeiro, Wildes Utopia. Longing for lost innocence (Frankfurt am Main 1986) 32)

He put it positively: “In fact, we are the new Rome . A later and tropical Rome. Brazil is already the largest Neo-Latin nation, if only for its population, and it is about to become one thanks to its creativity in artistic and cultural terms. It is only necessary to do the same in the field of the technology of a coming civilization in order to become an economic power of self-responsible progress. We are struggling to make a new culture flourish, mestizo and tropical, proud of ourselves. Much happier because more suffered. Better because this culture spans multiple humanities. More generous because it is open to coexistence with all races and cultures and because it is located in the most beautiful and brightest province on earth. "
