Seán Dublin Bay Rockall Loftus (birth name: Seán Loftus ) (* 1. November 1927 in Dublin ; † 10. July 2010 ) was an Irish environmental activists , politicians and 1995-1996 Mayor of Dublin (Lord Mayor of Dublin) .

biography

After visiting the Coláiste Mhuire , a teachers' college, he studied law at University College Dublin and was, once approved by the King's Inns as a lawyer ( Barrister ) engaged and specialized in particular on urban planning law . Later he was also a law lecturer at the Dublin Institute of Technology .

In 1961 he was the founder of the Christian Democrat Movement of Ireland and ran for the first time in the constituency elections in the same year in the constituency of Dublin North East , but without success.

After working as an environmental activist to preserve Dublin Bay , he changed his name to Seán Dublin Bay Rockall Loftus . He sat against oil refineries , underground natural gas - caverns and other influences on the bay one. In the 1970s he also campaigned for the preservation of Wood Quay .

In the 1973 general election he ran again in the Dublin North Central constituency and appeared on the electoral list with his changed name.

In 1974 he was elected a member of the Dublin City Council for the first time and was a member of this for the next 25 years until 1999. On June 18, 1979, he ran for the office of Lord Mayor of Dublin, but he achieved only 4 votes and was defeated by Eugene Timmons , who received 13 votes, and William Cumiskey , who was elected Lord Mayor with 27 votes .

In the 1981 elections he was finally elected Member of Parliament ( Teachta Dála ) of the House of Commons ( Dáil Éireann ) , where he represented the interests of the Dublin North East constituency . However, he failed to defend his parliamentary mandate in the early elections in February 1982, which took place shortly thereafter, although he ran not only in the constituency of Dublin North East , but also in Dublin North Central . Nevertheless, he ran for a seat in the Dáil Éireann again and again without success until 1997 .

As the successor to John Gormley , he was Mayor of Dublin for a year-long term in 1995.

In 1999 he founded Dublin Bay Watch , an association to protect Dublin Bay.
