Dungarvan Castle

Dungarvan Castle and King John's Castle Norman ( Irish Caisleán Dhun Garbhan ) is a lowland castle in Dungarvan in Ireland's County Waterford . It is considered a national monument .

description

Dungarvan Castle consists of a polygonal donjon surrounded by a curtain wall. There are towers at the corners and at the gate. The donjon ("Shell keep") from the 12th century is the oldest part of the castle; this form of donjon was common in England , but rare in Ireland. Inside the walls there is a two-story military barracks from the early 18th century. This barracks has been restored and houses an exhibition on the history of the castle. The current building is on the site of an earlier moth .

history

The castle is described as Anglo- Norman and was founded in 1185 by Prince Johann at the mouth of the Colligan River . It was one of several castles built in the south east of Ireland during this period. During the Irish Civil War the castle served as barracks for the English and was then captured by the IRA . When she left the castle in August 1922, she set it on fire. After the establishment of the Garda Síochána in the Free State of Ireland , the castle was restored and served as a station for the Garda Síochána until 1987. After 1987 the castle fell into disrepair again, but was renovated under the direction of Dúchas . Today there are guided tours, there is an exhibition and an audio-visual show.
