The St. George's Channel ( English St George's Channel , Welsh Sianel San Siôr , Irish Muir Bhreatan ) is a strait between Ireland and Wales . It connects the Irish Sea to the south with the Celtic Sea and the Atlantic Ocean . The narrowest point is between Carnsore Point in County Wexford, Ireland and St David's Head , the westernmost point on the Welsh mainland in Pembrokeshire .
Historically, the entire marine area between Ireland and south-west Great Britain from the Lleyn Peninsula to Land's End or Cape Cornwall was called St. George's Canal. The name is derived from a 14th century legend according to which St. George crossed the canal on his journey from Byzantium to Britain.
