Pillow is a borough in Dauphin County in Pennsylvania , United States . At the time of the 2010 United States Census , Pillow had 298 residents. The place belongs to the Harrisburg Metropolitan Area .
geography
Pillow is the northernmost city in Dauphin County and the only area in the county north of Mahantango Mountain . Pillow's geographic coordinates are 40 ° 38 ′ N , 76 ° 48 ′ W (40.640430, -76.803464). The place lies in a loop of the Mahantango Creek , a westward flowing tributary of the Susquehanna River . Its natural city limits are the river to the west, north and east, and Mahantango Mountain to the south.
The administrative neighbors of Pillos are the Jordan Township in the north and east , the Lykens Township in the southeast, the Mifflin Township in the south and the Lower Mahanoy Township in the west . Jordan and Lower Mahanoy Township are part of neighboring Northumberland County .
Pennsylvania Route 225 runs through the center of the resort. It leads northeast to Shamokin, 37 km away, and south to the city of Elizabethville, 11 km away .
According to the United States Census Bureau , the borough has a total area of 1.28 km 2 , land only.
history
Pillow was founded in 1818 by John Snyder, a land developer from Mercer County , as "Snydertown" ( Schneiderstettle ). The borough was incorporated on April 20, 1864 as "Uniontown". When the city got its first post office in 1847, there was already a post office in Pennsylvania under the name. A postal administration official replaced the name "Uniontown" with "Pillow" after General Gideon Pillow , who was popular at the time for his victories in the Mexican-American War . Over the next 100 years, the new name slowly caught on, and on November 2, 1965, the residents of the town voted for the name of their town to be officially “Pillow”.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Pillow had several industrial operations, including a cotton weaving mill, a brick factory and a potato chip factory.

At the time of the United States Census 2000, Pillow had 304 people. The population density was 244.5 people per km ². There were 139 housing units at an average of 111.8 per km ². The Pillows population was 99.67% White , 0% Black or African American , 0% Native American , 0% Asian , 0% Pacific Islander , 0% said they were racial , and 0.33% said two or more Races. 0% of the population declared to be Hispanic or Latinos of any race.
The residents of Pillows were distributed to 131 households out of which 26.0% were living in children under 18 years of age. 64.1% of households were married, 2.3% had a female head of the household without a husband, and 29.0% were not families. 25.2% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 10.7% of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.32 and the average family size was 2.75 people.
The population was divided into 21.1% minors, 6.9% 18–24 year olds, 29.3% 25–44 year olds, 25.7% 45–64 year olds and 17.1% aged 65 and over or more. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 women there were 109.7 men. For every 100 women over the age of 18, there were 101.7 men.

education
The school-age residents of Pillow can enjoy the local public schools operated by the Upper Dauphin School District covering all ages from kindergarten through 12th grade. Pillow students can also attend the Harrisburg Infinity Charter School or any of the state's 13 public cyber schools without incurring a parent fee as the school district pays tuition fees for local students. Pillow students can attend Harrisburg Area Community College . It is funded by the Pillows residents through an annual lump sum that the Upper Dauphin School District reads.
