Lower Mahanoy Township is a township in Northumberland County , Pennsylvania , United States . At the time of the 2010 United States Census , the township had 1,709 inhabitants, up from 1,586 in the 2000 census.

According to the United States Census Bureau , the township has a total area of 65.9 km 2 , of which 56.8 km 2 is land and 9.1 km 2 (= 13.90%) is water. Natural boundaries of Lower Mahanoy Township are Mahantango Creek in the south, Susquehanna River in the west, and Hooflander Mountain in the north.
Administratively, the township borders on Jackson Township in the north, Jordan Township in the east, Pillow in the southeast, and Mifflin Township in the south , both in neighboring Dauphin County . West of the Susquehanna River is the border to Snyder County with Chapman Township .
The area between Hooflander Mountain and Fisher Ridge is drained by Dalmatia Creek . South of the Fisher Ridge, the streams mostly flow to Mahantango Creek, but in the far west some streams flow directly into the Susquehanna River. In the river - and thus part of the township - there are numerous islands and sandbanks. In Dalmatia are Zeigler Iceland and Iceland Browns, further upstream Herrold Iceland and Blood Iceland.
Besides Dalmatia, there are four other named hamlets in Lower Mahanoy Township. Malta in the south west is little more than a street crossing with a few houses around it. Hickory Corners is on the north side of a gap in Fisher Ridge, east of Dalmatia, where several streets intersect. Mandata is a street village in the northeast of the township on Pennsylvania State Road 225 .

Demographics
At the time of the United States Census 2000, Lower Mahanoy Township had 1,586 people. The population density was 27.9 people per km ². There were 691 housing units at an average of 12.2 per km ². The population of Lower Mahanoy Townships was 99.43% white , 0.38% black or African American , 0% Native American , 0% Asian , 0% Pacific Islander , 0.06% said to be of other ethnic groups and 0, 13% named two or more ethnicities. 0.19% of the population declared to be Hispanic or Latino of any race.
The residents of Lower Mahanoy Townships were distributed to 634 households out of which 29.7% were living in children under the age of 18. 67.5% of households were married, 5.0% had a female head of the household without a husband and 23.3% were not families. 19.9% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 9.1% of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 2.85.
The population was divided into 22.2% minors, 7.4% 18–24 year olds, 28.0% 25–44 year olds, 26.5% 45–64 year olds and 15.9% aged 65 and over or more. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 women there were 104.9 men. For every 100 women over the age of 18, there were 103.3 men.
The median household income in Lower Mahanoy Township was 39,279 US dollars and the median family income reached the amount of 43,750 US dollars. The median income for men was $ 31,183 versus $ 21,250 for women. The per capita income was $ 17,097. 6.0% of the population and 2.6% of families had an income below the poverty line , including 7.4% of minors and 7.7% of those aged 65 and over.
