Lower Mahanoy Township is a township in Northumberland County , Pennsylvania , United States . At the time of the 2010 United States Census , the township had 1,709 inhabitants, up from 1,586 in the 2000 census.

According to the United States Census Bureau , the township has a total area of ​​65.9 km 2 , of which 56.8 km 2 is land and 9.1 km 2 (= 13.90%) is water. Natural boundaries of Lower Mahanoy Township are Mahantango Creek in the south, Susquehanna River in the west, and Hooflander Mountain in the north.

Administratively, the township borders on Jackson Township in the north, Jordan Township in the east, Pillow in the southeast, and Mifflin Township in the south , both in neighboring Dauphin County . West of the Susquehanna River is the border to Snyder County with Chapman Township .

The area between Hooflander Mountain and Fisher Ridge is drained by Dalmatia Creek . South of the Fisher Ridge, the streams mostly flow to Mahantango Creek, but in the far west some streams flow directly into the Susquehanna River. In the river - and thus part of the township - there are numerous islands and sandbanks. In Dalmatia are Zeigler Iceland and Iceland Browns, further upstream Herrold Iceland and Blood Iceland.

Besides Dalmatia, there are four other named hamlets in Lower Mahanoy Township. Malta in the south west is little more than a street crossing with a few houses around it. Hickory Corners is on the north side of a gap in Fisher Ridge, east of Dalmatia, where several streets intersect. Mandata is a street village in the northeast of the township on Pennsylvania State Road 225 .
