Another branch of the economy is supplying the numerous drilling platforms off the coast. One of these oil production facilities , the Deepwater Horizon platform , located about 84 km southeast of Venice in the Gulf of Mexico, sank on April 22, 2010 after an explosion. As a result of this accident, crude oil ran out of the leak at a depth of 1,500 m and caused an oil spill on a scale never seen before. This means an environmental catastrophe for the sensitive flora and fauna in the Mississippi river delta and in other coastal areas of the Gulf, but also a threat to the livelihoods of the inhabitants of Venice and other coastal towns.
