Monchi , real name Ramón Rodríguez Verdejo (born September 20, 1968 in San Fernando ), is a former Spanish soccer goalkeeper who was sports director of Sevilla FC from 2000 to 2017 and has held this position again since 2019. From April 2017 to 2019 he was Sports Director at AS Roma .

Career

As a player

Monchi first played with the second team of Sevilla FC , called Sevilla Atlético, in the third Spanish division . In his first season he was only a substitute goalkeeper, only made four appearances and only became a regular goalkeeper in his second season. As the new goalkeeper he only missed one game and was promoted to the professional team at the end of the season. There he made his debut in the Primera División in the 1990/91 season , in a 1-1 draw in the away game against Real Sociedad San Sebastián . In the following years he was mostly a substitute goalkeeper behind Juan Carlos Unzué . In the 1995/96 season he played almost half of the league games with 18 appearances. During the 1996/97 season he was able to replace Unzué as a goalkeeper, but the season ended with the relegation of Seville. Unzué then left the club and Monchi was Seville's first goalkeeper in the second division for two years before ending his career after being promoted again in the 1998/99 season.

As a sports director

Shortly after the end of his active career, Monchi became the new sports director of Sevilla FC in 2000 . Shortly after taking office, Seville, which had been relegated directly in the 1999/2000 season , was promoted again in the 2000/01 season . In the following years he developed both youth work and scouting at Sevilla FC and the club produced great talents such as José Antonio Reyes , Sergio Ramos , Diego Capel , Jesús Navas , Alberto Moreno and Antonio Puerta during this time . The more than 700 scouts who work under Monchi also discovered later star players such as Dani Alves , Júlio Baptista , Federico Fazio , Carlos Bacca , Adriano , Luís Fabiano or Kevin Gameiro . Most of these players were profitably resold after some time and Sevilla FC was able to achieve a profit of an estimated more than 100 million euros on the sales. Nevertheless, Sevilla FC was also very successful in sport during this time and was able to win the UEFA Europa League five times and the Copa del Rey twice . His contract with Sevilla FC ran until 2020 and included a fixed transfer fee of five million euros. On April 23, 2017 Monchi switched to the Italian first division club AS Roma as Sporting Director , and in 2019 he returned to Seville.

Personal

In addition to Spanish , Monchi speaks fluent French and Italian . He is the godfather of Ivan Rakitić's daughter Raquel.
