Antonio José Puerta Pérez (born November 26, 1984 in Seville ; † August 28, 2007 ibid) was a Spanish football player who was under contract with Sevilla FC in the Spanish Primera División until his death .

Career

Puerta played for Spanish first division club Sevilla FC throughout his career . He made his debut in the first team in March 2004 in a league game against FC Málaga . In the 2005/06 season he became a regular player. In the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup , he scored against FC Schalke 04 and thus contributed significantly to the UEFA Cup victory. Also in 2007 he came up with Sevilla in the UEFA Cup Final, turning there in the penalty shoot the final penalty. Because of his international successes, Manchester United and Arsenal London took an interest in the midfielder. But there was no change.

He played his only international match for Spain as a substitute against Sweden on October 7, 2006.

death

In the first game of the 2007/08 season on August 25, 2007 against Getafe FC , Puerta suffered a collapse in the 31st minute. After being replaced, he collapsed again in the cabin and suffered cardiovascular arrest . The doctors had to resuscitate him a total of five times and later took him to the hospital , where he received artificial respiration in the intensive care unit . Three days after the game, his condition worsened. He died around 3:45 p.m. on August 28.

Puerta left behind his pregnant partner, who gave birth to their son in October 2007.

The attending physician Francisco Murillo reported that Puerta had suffered multiple organ failures in connection with irreversible damage to the brain as a result of the multiple prolonged cardiac arrests. The cause of this is an incurable, hereditary heart disease known as arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy .
