Baptista in the 2007 Arsenal jersey

In 2000 Baptista began his professional career in his hometown with the traditional club FC São Paulo . He played there in central midfield together with well-known players such as Kaká . Because of his impressive physical constitution, he was called Der Panzer by fans at the time .

In 2003 he moved to the Spanish first division club FC Sevilla and no longer played in the central midfield as in Brazil, but as a hanging top in the storm. The result was 38 goals in 63 games in his first two years in the Spanish Primera División . As a result of its good performance in addition to other top clubs Real Madrid on The Beast , as the Spanish fans call him lovingly, carefully and signed him in the summer of 2005 for the equivalent of 20 million euros.

With the Spanish record champions he was assigned jersey number 8 and has since been used as an all-rounder in the offensive midfield, in the central midfield, as a hanging tip and occasionally on the wing. In 2006 he moved to Arsenal on loan in exchange with José Antonio Reyes , but returned to Real Madrid for the 2007/08 season after Arsenal coach Wenger refused to take the option to buy.

For the 2008/09 season , Baptista moved from Real to AS Roma for nine million euros (plus an extra bonus of one million euros each in the case of Champions League qualification in the next two years) . The Brazilian won a four-year contract with the Italian club that brings him € 4.5 million per season. He immediately proved his qualities at the Italian capital club and became a leading player. In his second year with the Roma , Baptista was less active. At the end of the season the team was runner-up and reached the final of the Coppa Italia . In both competitions, the team failed at Inter Milan . Baptista was not included in the final of the national cup. The reason was the declining performance of the all-rounder and the competition from players like Francesco Totti , Mirko Vučinić , Jérémy Ménez and Simone Perrotta .

In the winter of 2011, Baptista moved to Spain again when he moved to Malaga FC . He signed a contract there until 2014.

In the summer of 2013, Baptista joined the Cruzeiro Esporte Clube . With this he was able to win the Brazilian championship in the same year . A success that was repeated in 2014 . The contract expired at the end of 2015 and was not extended.

In August 2018 he moved to Romania to the first division club CFR Cluj .

National team

Baptista made his debut in the Brazilian national team at the age of 19 at the Confederations Cup in Japan and South Korea in 2001 . There he came on June 4, 2001 for his first assignment in the dress of the South American. In the 0-0 win against hosts Japan , then coach Émerson Leão replaced him in the 62nd minute for Ramon . Two years later, Baptista was appointed to a U-23 squad to represent the colors of his country at the 2003 CONCACAF Gold Cup .

The all-rounder was used in all five possible games, whereby the team failed in the final with 0: 1 after extra time to Mexico . In the following years Baptista was regularly appointed to the cadre of the Seleção. As a result, he was in the squad for the 2004 and 2007 Copa America , as well as the 2005 and 2009 Confederations Cup . After Baptista played regularly during qualifying for the 2010 World Cup , coach Carlos Dunga appointed him to the Brazilian squad in May 2010 . During the entire tournament, however, the midfielder was only used once. In the quarter-finals, the team was eliminated against the Netherlands .
