Jean Varraud ( 1921 - June 24, 2006 ) was a French football player . In his later role as a talent scout, he discovered the three-time world footballer Zinédine Zidane .

Player career

Varraud's career as an active player in professional football was short-lived. On October 3, 1937, the then 16-year-old made his debut for AS Saint-Étienne in a game against FC Toulouse in the French second division, which was also his only one. He also played two games in the national cup competition during the same season. The youngster then failed to make his breakthrough in the Saint-Étienne team, so he had to give up his professional career again. During the Second World War he helped his former teammates Ignace Tax and Ferenc Odry by temporarily taking them in after their return from the front.

Working in promoting young talent

In the 1950s he took on the role of youth coach at AS Cannes, which is located in the south of France . As such, he was involved in the training of numerous later professionals, including the national players Vincent Estève and Charly Loubet . He kept the coaching post until 1980 and then switched to the role of talent scout at the same club. In 1986 he discovered the then 14-year-old Zinédine Zidane during a tournament and made it possible for him to join the training center in Cannes in the summer of 1987. Zidane later became world champion, European champion and three-time world footballer. Varraud held the position as a talent scout, which he took over in 1980, for around 20 years and only retired from it when he was old. In June 2006 he died of cancer.
