The Club Deportivo Tenerife, SAD , known in German-speaking countries as CD Tenerife , is a Spanish football club (sports stock corporation) from the Canary Island of Tenerife . The team currently plays in the Segunda División , the second highest Spanish league. It plays its home games in the Estadio Heliodoro Rodríguez López in the island's capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, with a capacity of 24,000 .
history
The official founding date of the CD Tenerife is August 8th 1922. In some documents it is mentioned that a club called Sporting Club Tenerife existed as early as 1912 , which could have been a forerunner of the CD.
Until 1953, the club only played in leagues at regional level, before being promoted to the Segunda Division for the first time. 1961 was even promoted to the Primera División , but from which one relegated again after one season.
From 1962 to 1976 CD shuttled between the Segunda División and the Tercera División , the third highest division at the time. From 1976 to 1982 the team was active in the newly created Segunda División B , which is now the third highest division, before being promoted back to the Segunda Division.
In June 1986, a year after another relegation to the "Segunda B", Javier Pérez became president of the club. In the following year they rose again to the "Segunda" and in 1989 for the second time in the club's history to the Primera División, where the club was able to hold until 1999.
On the last day of the 1991/92 season, with Jorge Valdano as coach, they secured the league with a 3-2 win over Real Madrid on the last day. This cost the opponent the championship, as FC Barcelona won 2-0 against Athletic Bilbao and thereby overtook Real.
In the following year the events repeated themselves. CD Tenerife beat Real Madrid again, this time 2-0, and FC Barcelona trumped the “Royal” again on the last day of the match by beating Real Sociedad San Sebastián 1-0 . However, CD finished the 1992/93 season in fifth place and qualified for the UEFA Cup for the first time , where they were eliminated 3-0 and 2-1 by defending champions Juventus Turin after moving into the third round .
In 1995 the club, which was converted into a stock corporation in 1992, hired Jupp Heynckes as a trainer together with Ewald Lienen as co- trainer and later Egon Coordes as fitness trainer . In 1996 they qualified again for the European football stage in fifth place. After successes against Maccabi Tel Aviv , Lazio Rome , Feyenoord Rotterdam and Brøndby Copenhagen, CD made it into the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup and was only eliminated against eventual winners FC Schalke 04 after two games 1-0 and 0-2 aet .
In the following years the club could not build on previous successes. After 10 years of excellence, 1999 had to relegate back to the Segunda División. Two years later, under coach Rafael Benítez, the promotion took place thanks to a goal from Hugo Morales in the last game of the season. Benitez then left the club in the direction of Valencia .
Pepe Mel became the new coach, but the season in the premier league was anything but good. Tenerife lost 6-0 at home to FC Barcelona on Matchday 23 and Mel was sacked as coach. Under the new coach Javier Clemente , the team achieved a few wins, but the relegation could no longer be prevented.
After that, CD Tenerife, burdened with high debts (over 40 million euros ), had to fight for its economic survival. President Javier Pérez was replaced by Víctor Pérez de Ascanio, who in turn resigned in 2005. The incumbent President Miguel Concepción negotiated with politicians and business people and created a construction company as a subsidiary of the Sport-Aktiengesellschaft, which undertook to cede 50% of its profits to CD Tenerife.
In the 2008/09 season , CD Tenerife took third place in the Segunda División and rose again to the Primera División. In the 2009/10 season , however, the club rose immediately back to the Segunda División. A disastrous year later, even the descent into the Segunda División B . In the 2012/13 season they returned to the second division. After a mixed season in 2013/14 they reached a safe 11th place. A year later, with 17th place and 4 points ahead, relegation could only just be prevented. In the following season you ended up in the lower midfield. In the 2016/17 season, 4th place qualified for participation in the playoffs for promotion to the Primera División; there CD failed in the playoff just at Getafe FC.
