Rubén Baraja Vegas (born July 11, 1975 in Valladolid ) is a former Spanish football player who spent most of his career at Valencia CF in the Primera División .

The strengths of the goal-scoring central midfielder lay in his accuracy of pass, his eye for the free man and his good tackles.

Career

Baraja began his career with his hometown club Real Valladolid before moving to Atlético Madrid B in 1996 . There he was a regular for two and a half years until he played for the first team for the first time in February 1999, when he lost 2-1 to UD Salamanca . After Atlético relegated to the Segunda División at the end of the 1999/2000 season, Baraja moved to Valencia CF for just under 10 million euros , which needed a new midfielder due to the departures of Claudio López and Javier Farinós . He made his debut on September 9, 2000 against Real Madrid . Baraja was later one of the key players who were helping to maintain Valencia in 2001 into the Champions League moved Finals, where one against Bayern Munich lost on penalties. The following season was also very successful for him, he helped his team with important goals at the end of the season to the first championship in 31 years. In the 2002/03 season he played 35 of the 38 league games, but Valencia was only fifth in the league. The following season was very successful again, he won the UEFA Cup with Valencia with a 2-0 victory in the final over Olympique Marseille .

In the 2006/07 season Baraja had to contend with unlucky injuries and could only play 14 games. In 2007/08 he won the Spanish Cup with Valencia despite a disappointing league placement (10th) . After three more seasons, in which he regularly ran alongside David Albelda , sometimes also as captain, he ended his career after the 2009/10 season.

National team

Since October 7, 2000, when he made his debut in a 2-0 win over Israel , he has played 43 times for the Spanish national soccer team. Baraja played with Spain in the 2002 World Cup, where he played all four full-time games before Spain lost to South Korea on penalties in the round of 16 . He also took part in the next big tournament, the 2004 European Championships . He played in each of the three preliminary round matches. For the 2006 World Cup , he was not considered by Luis Aragonés .
