Redondo began in the youth of the Bonaren suburb club CA Talleres de Remedios de Escalada , where he also played indoor football . In 1985 he became South American champion with the Argentine U-17 national team and joined the Argentinos Juniors , where he made his debut in the first team at the age of 16.

In 1990 Redondo was signed by the Spanish first division club CD Tenerife , where the 1986 Argentine soccer world champion and ex- Real Madrid player Jorge Valdano directed training. After four relatively successful years, “El Principe”, as he is called by his fans, moved to Real Madrid with Valdano. Real paid $ 5 million for Redondo.

With Real, the Argentine won the Spanish championship in 1995 and 1997 and the UEFA Champions League in 1998 and 2000. In the 1999/2000 season in the quarter-finals of the Champions League against Manchester United , Redondo pushed the then ManU defender to make it 3-2 for Real Henning Berg put the ball through his legs with a heel and played perfectly for striker Raúl , who only had to push the ball in. In English usage this action is only referred to as the backheel of Old Trafford . Real eventually won the final and Redondo was voted CL season player . In the same year Redondo was transferred to AC Milan for around € 17.5 million . Due to the sale of the midfield strategist , riots broke out in downtown Madrid .

Due to serious knee injuries , however, he was unable to make a major contribution to his new club in the first two seasons. The Argentine attracted a lot of attention when he announced in September 2001 that he would be waiving his salary until the time of his comeback. It was only on December 3, 2002 that he made his debut for AC Milan in the cup match against Ancona Calcio . In the seasons 2002/03 and 2003/04, he entered each 8 times for Milan in Serie A on. In the 2002/03 season he won the Champions League with Milan. He appeared in this competition 5 times for his club, but was not in the final line-up. In 2004 he won the Italian championship with AC Milan . After that season, Fernando Redondo retired due to sustained injuries.

National team

Fernando Redondo played a total of 29 times for the Argentine national soccer team . The defensive midfielder had most appearances between 1992 and 1994 under team coach Alfio Basile . Before the soccer World Cup in Italy in 1990 , there were rumors that the then young star might be called up. Redondo canceled the team coach at the time because he officially did not want to interrupt his studies. Unofficially, it was said that the Argentine did not agree with the very defensive tactics of the then team coach Carlos Bilardo .

In 1992 Redondo won the first edition of the Confederations Cup with Argentina as the King Fahd Cup . The following year he won the 1993 Copa America with Argentina in Ecuador , where he was sent off in the last group game. But he was eligible to play again from the semi-finals. In 1994 he took part in the 1994 World Cup in the USA , where the Argentines were eliminated in the round of 16.

Before the 1998 World Cup in France , Redondo was kicked out of the team by coach Daniel Passarella because he had long hair. Official statement from Passarella was that he wanted to use the midfield strategist on the left, but Redondo had insisted on his place in defensive midfield. In 1999, under the new coach Marcelo Bielsa , three more appearances followed (against the Netherlands in March and twice against Brazil in September). In the 2-0 home win against the neighbor, he was voted "Man of the Match". Although Bielsa was hoping for more Redondo appearances, he retired from the team to focus on his club Real Madrid .

In his early days on the Argentina national team, Diego Maradona was his friend and mentor.
