On August 8, 2017, he was promoted to the squad of the first team by coach Luis César Sampedro , which was playing in the Segunda División at the time. He made his debut in a 2-0 away win in the Copa del Rey against SD Huesca on September 6, when he came on for Ángel García in the 47th minute . On May 27, 2018, he met Valladolid's first team for the first time in the 3-2 away defeat against Real Zaragoza . When they reached sixth place in the table they qualified for the promotion playoffs, which they won in the final against CD Numancia and thus rose to the Primera División .

On August 9, 2019, Fernando Calero moved to league rivals Espanyol Barcelona , where he signed a five-year contract and was to inherit Mario Hermoso, who had moved to Atlético Madrid . A transfer fee of eight million was paid for the central defender. He made his debut on August 18 (1st matchday) in the 2-0 home defeat against Sevilla FC . Due to injury concerns, he could not finally play in the starting line-up in the 2019/20 season and therefore only played 15 league games.
