Marco van Hoogdalem (born May 23, 1972 in Gorinchem ) is a former Dutch football player .

Club career

Beginnings in Gorinchem

Marco van Hoogdalem comes from the Gorinchemer district Lingewijk. His father Jan van Hoogdalem was a youth coach at SVW Gorinchem and had his son play in the F-youth at the age of four. He had already learned how to handle the ball at school break and street football with his three-year-old brother John and his friends. When he was 15, his coach Hans van Dongen brought him from the A-youth to the first team of the amateur club. At that time he was still playing in the center-forward position . In his debut game against Hermes DVS , he also scored his first goal in the senior division. The team finished second this season and just missed promotion.

Professional in Waalwijk

After an audition in the professional field - at the FC Dordrecht predecessor DS'79 - van Hoogdalem decided to switch to the A-youth team at RKC Waalwijk . After he had earned 26 goals for the junior team in the first half of 1989/90, he was promoted to the second team during the winter break and shortly afterwards to the first team. On March 11, 1990, he made his debut in the Eredivisie when he came on in the match at FC Den Haag in the 62nd minute for Maurice Schopenhouer, also from Gorcum . His first goal - van Hoogdalem still played as a striker, at RKC at the time together with Schopenhouer alongside former national player André Hoekstra - he scored two weeks later at FC Twente . As a substitute, he scored the only goal of the game shortly before the end. In this and the following season 1990/91 he remained a supplementary player, came in the year and a half to 24 appearances in the league, mostly as a substitute. In the 1991/92 season - the RKC squad now included illustrious players such as Harry Decheiver , Rob Maas , Jos Luhukay and Marc van Hintum - he made the breakthrough to become a regular with coach Leo van Veen , who was in all positions on the left the defense until the storm was used. After seventh place in the previous season - no RKC team had done better before - it was only tenth in 1992 and ninth in 1993.

Successes with Roda JC

For the 1993/94 season van Hoogdalem moved to Roda Kerkrade , where in March 1993 Huub Stevens had started his first station as head coach. Although the Kerkraders had finished the season two places behind the RKC, Stevens was in the process of building a team that would be the most successful in Roda history. After sixth place in 1994, the club penetrated the phalanx of the "big three" - Ajax , Feyenoord and PSV  - for the first time in the 1994/95 season  and won a UEFA Cup position with second place in the table . Van Hoogdalem now had his regular place in central defense at Stevens alongside Johan de Kock . Together with goalkeeper Ruud Hesp , they were a guarantee for success: Roda only conceded 28 goals in the season, as few as champions Ajax. In 1996, Roda JC qualified for the UEFA Cup with fourth place in the Eredivisie . Two weeks after losing the first round against eventual UEFA Cup winner FC Schalke 04 , who had already secured the services of Johan de Kock at the beginning of the season, coach Huub Stevens also switched to the opponent; Marco van Hoogdalem followed him during the winter break. Her former team won the KNVB Cup final against sc Heerenveen in May .

Cup wins with Schalke 04

On February 15, 1997 van Hoogdalem made his Bundesliga debut; in the game against VfB Stuttgart he was substituted on for Jiří Němec . In the UEFA Cup competition he could not be used at Schalke, as he had already played for Roda JC against his new club, so that he was only a "squad Eurofighter". For the first two and a half years it was difficult for him to find his place on the team. But, as he later said, had it

“... from the beginning the Schalke virus seized. One can compare this with an incurable disease for which no remedy can be found. It is one of the greatest clubs in Germany. "

Winning the European Cup laid the foundation for several successful years for him and for FC Schalke 04. In 2001 and 2002 they won the DFB Cup twice . In the 2000/01 season van Hoogdalem was runner-up with the team ("Master of Hearts"); The disappointment after Patrik Andersson 's goal in the Volksparkstadion in stoppage time, which destroyed the four-minute dream of the Schalke's first championship in 43 years, is one of the football lows in his life. He then played with the Gelsenkirchen team in the Champions League , scoring two goals against RCD Mallorca and Arsenal . He was a top performer on his team until 2003 - he once described the period from 2000 to 2003 as “my best years” - before a serious hip injury set him back from May 2003. After an operation, he was only able to resume training in September 2003, at a time when the new coach Jupp Heynckes had already found his team. He tried to find a connection with the Schalke amateurs in the Regionalliga Nord; but finally he was loaned to Roda JC for half a year during the winter break of 2003/04, where he came to ten other missions in the Eredivisie. His last league game as a professional, without his being able to know it at the time, was the match in Waalwijk against his former club RKC on April 17, 2004, in which Roda JC played 1-1.

After his return to FC Schalke 04, he was no longer able to play his way back into the team. He stayed at Revierclub until 2006 and was runner-up again in 2004/05 - although he did not play a game for Schalke in those two years. The consequences of the hip operation and a chronic liver disease forced him to end his career at the age of 34.

National team

Marco van Hoogdalem and Bryan Roy , Frank and Ronald de Boer were in the Jong Oranje selection , which, as the best quarter-finalist of the U-21 European Championship in 1992, narrowly failed to qualify for the Olympic football tournament in Barcelona in the playoffs against Australia . After a 0-0 away game, Ned Zelic scored the decisive goal for the Australians to equalize 1-1 in the Dutch home game. In contrast to his teammates from U-21, van Hoogdalem never made it to the senior national team, which he himself considers incomprehensible:

“I can't understand why the national coaches never came to see me play. Players like Melchiot and Reiziger were called up, but no one saw me playing my games at a very high level every week. Germany and Gelsenkirchen were obviously too far away. "

successes

After the professional career

Marco van Hoogdalem and his wife Danny have been running an inn near Voerendaal-Ubachsberg in southern Limburg since April 2007 . His liver disease was under control; however, at the beginning of 2010 he was on the waiting list for a transplant. On the side, van Hoogdalem coached Roda JC's A-youth in 2010. His older son also played in the Roda youth team in 2010, and the younger son was active in a smaller amateur club. Marco van Hoogdalem looks back rather sadly at the end of his career:

“I've made everything and maybe more of my footballing career. But I'm tired of not being able to play football anymore. If a ball goes my way, I know that if I shoot it back, it will cause me great pain. And that hurts."
