history
The club was founded on August 4, 1886 as the gymnastics club Helene Amalie Essen . The founders of the association included workers from the Helene and Amalie collieries , who integrated the names of the mines into the association's name. On April 13, 1913, a football division was established. In 1919 the name was changed to TuS Helene Amalie Essen-West , before the club name was changed to TuRa Essen on February 8, 1920.
In 1947 TuRa just missed the qualifying round for the newly created Oberliga West . A year later, TuRa was third in the Niederrhein Championship behind local rivals Rot-Weiss , who were promoted to the top division, and Duisburg SpV . In 1949 the TuRa was one of the founding members of the 2nd Division West. Despite an eighth place in the table, the club's license was withdrawn for economic reasons.
In the following years TuRa fell deeply. Relegation from the regional league in 1952 was followed by relegation to the district league a year later. After the immediate promotion to the regional league, the club achieved promotion to the regional league in 1956 after two 2-1 wins in playoffs with BV Altenessen 06 . After 14 years in the national league, the TuRa 1970 rose in the district league from. Eleven years later the club slipped into the district league A. Since then, the club has been commuting between the district league A and B.
