Stahl is a district of Bitburg in the Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm in Rhineland-Palatinate . Until 1969, Stahl was an independent municipality .

geography

The place is in the southern Eifel about 2 km west of the center of Bitburg in the Nimstal .

Steel also includes the Backesmühle, Wingertsberg and Auf Büchelsbach residential areas .

history

Three Roman settlements were excavated in the Stahls area. After securing these finds, they were filled in again. The villa rustica dates from the 2nd century and was opened in the Stahler district to the right of the Nims across from today's castle mill. Remnants of plaster with paintings were found there. Roman settlement was also found in the “Buppert” district. During construction work on the sewage treatment plant in 1982, a small residential and ironworks complex consisting of six buildings was discovered. Furthermore, 50 bronze coins and a gold coin of the Roman Emperor Constantine II (337–361) minted in today's Turkey are among the numerous finds from Roman times . Twelve barrows lie to the west of Stahl.

The first documentary mention as "Stalle" in the Prüm property register comes from the year 893. The earliest information on the extent of the population of the place comes from 1470, when the Luxembourg fireplace register registered seven houses for "Stalle". In 1766 Stahl already had 89 inhabitants in nine houses, in 1962 379 inhabitants in 68 houses and in 1980 over 700 inhabitants.

After the Second World War the city grew rapidly, triggered by the huge demand for housing due to the establishment of the NATO - airfield in Bitburg. The development was concentrated in this time BC. a. on the Stahler Weg. In the 1980s, the “Am Hahnenberg” and “Unter'm Stahler Kopf” building areas were developed, and in 2002 the “Hammerwies” building area east of Oberweiser Strasse was added. Since 2006 the planning for further building areas north of "Hammerwies" and "Unter'm Stahler Kopf" has been running.

The previously independent municipality of Stahl was incorporated into the city of Bitburg on June 7, 1969.

politics

The interests of the Stahl district are represented by a local advisory council made up of eleven members. The head of the village is Rudolf Rüdesheim.
