René Schnitzler (born April 14, 1985 in Mönchengladbach ) is a German football coach and player.

Career

Schnitzler began his career in the North Rhine Football League as a player on the Borussia Mönchengladbach amateur team and continued this in the regional league for the second representatives of Borussia and Bayer 04 Leverkusen . In the 2006/07 season he was a regular player in the third division team of the Mönchengladbach youth team and scored 14 goals. Because of his performance, he was allowed to train regularly with the club's first division team. He made his debut in the first division on the 34th Bundesliga matchday. In the game against VfL Bochum he was substituted on in the middle of the second half.

For the 2007/08 season Schnitzler moved to the second division FC St. Pauli . There he signed a contract that ran until June 30, 2009. However, at the beginning of May 2009, Schnitzler was released from his employment contract.

At the end of August 2009, Schnitzler moved to FC Wegberg-Beeck , who played in the Mittelrhein Association . With this club he won the championship and rose to the NRW League . On December 15, 2010, his contract was terminated, the club wanted to enable him to return to professional football. In February 2011 Schnitzler joined the Mönchengladbach district league club 1. FC Bettrath.

At the beginning of January 2011, Schnitzler admitted that he had received a total of 100,000 euros from a member of the “soccer competition mafia” while he was at FC St. Pauli . The outcome of the games against FC Augsburg, FC Hansa Rostock, MSV Duisburg and twice at 1. FSV Mainz 05 should be manipulated. However, there was no evidence of actual tampering. Nevertheless, the DFB Sports Court banned him in July 2011 for the period March 30, 2011 up to and including September 30, 2013 not only as a player, but also for any other functions at the DFB, its member associations and their clubs and corporations. The ban was shorter than the maximum possible, as the DFB Schnitzler credited his participation in the investigation, at least in some areas.

After his suspension he joined his youth club Rheydter SV . There he took over the position of player-coach. With the club, however, he rose from the regional league (2014) and district league (2015) to the district league A.

In 2011 Wigbert Löer and Rainer Schäfer published the book “Zockerliga. A professional footballer unpacks ”, in which René Schnitzler's career, football and gambling career are documented and which generally calls into question the attitude of professional football to gambling.

Betting scandal

In April 2015 Schnitzler was sentenced by the Bochum regional court to a fine of 900 euros for attempted tax evasion. He had accepted a bribe of 60,000 euros for match fixing, but this money was not taxed. He was acquitted of the accusation of betting fraud because a serious and binding manipulation agreement could not be established.
