Karsten Hutwelker (born August 27, 1971 in Wuppertal ) is a former German soccer player and today's soccer coach . Since March 2019 he has been employed by Wuppertaler SV as its sports director.
Career
In the club
Karsten Hutwelker has played with a total of 13 different clubs since 1990 with varying degrees of success. He began his Bundesliga career at Fortuna Düsseldorf , where he played for three years until he joined Wattenscheid 09 in 1993 . After playing only five games there, he moved first to Wuppertaler SV and then to FC Carl Zeiss Jena , until he ended up at VfL Bochum in 1996 , where he celebrated his greatest success, namely qualifying for the 1997/98 UEFA Cup .
He stayed in Bochum for only two years and moved to 1. FC Köln in 1998 , where he went to 1. FC Saarbrücken after only one year . From there he moved to Ahlen in 2001 for half a year until he returned to Saarbrücken in winter. The 2002/03 season brought him to Italy for Fiorentina in Serie C2 . From 2004 to 2007 he was under contract with FC Augsburg . He was one of the heroes of promotion to the 2. Bundesliga in the 2005/06 season.
On the last day of the 2006/07 season he wanted to end his professional career at FC Augsburg, but in the 2007/08 season Hutwelker moved to the Austrian first division club SCR Altach , where he was dismissed in December 2008. The official reason for this was the alleged lack of sporting perspective, but Hutwelker himself spoke of conflicts with coach Urs Schönenberger . In February 2009 he was signed by TSC Euskirchen.
From the 2009/10 season he worked as a player-coach for the Kassel- based association league promoted VfB Süsterfeld.
In addition to his coaching work at Bonner SC , Hutwelker was still active as a player at Rot-Weiss Frankfurt in the Oberliga Hessen in the 2010/11 season .
Career as a trainer and functionary
For the 2010/11 season, Karsten Hutwelker was introduced as the new coach of Bonner SC . There he should form a young team in the NRW League to keep the class. The Bonner SC had previously been relegated from the Regionalliga West due to financial problems. Hutwelker's predecessor was Wolfgang Jerat . The tight financial situation of the Bonner SC meant that in July 2010 insolvency proceedings had to be opened. This meant that the first team was also excluded from the NRW League and did not take part in any matches in 2010/11. Hutwelker nevertheless agreed to help the club and became the new coach of the U-19s, which took part in their league's operations despite the bankruptcy proceedings. There he initially worked without earnings and wanted to lay the foundation for the club's future development and build a framework of young players for future men's teams.
At the end of 2010, Hutwelker announced that he would no longer act as coach of Bonner SC due to the continued poor perspective. From April 2011 to May 2011 Hutwelker trained the A-youth of SG Wattenscheid 09.
On June 8, 2011 Hutwelker took over the position of coach from Michael Dämgen at Wuppertaler SV Borussia in the Regionalliga West . However, this coaching activity lasted only 14 weeks. On September 19, 2011, the club announced that due to the sporting situation (the WSV was already nine points behind in first place as a promotion favorite), Hutwelker was parting ways. His successor was Hans-Günter Bruns .
In March 2013, Hutwelker passed the soccer teacher exam .
On November 4, 2013 Hutwelker took over the coaching position at the upper division FC Kray . Only five months later, on March 19, 2014, he withdrew his release clause from the contract that ran until summer 2015 and announced that he would be leaving the club in summer 2014.
In the summer of 2014, Hutwelker became assistant coach to Belgian Patrick van Kets at FC Carl Zeiss Jena , and he also took over the post of head coach of the second team at FC Carl Zeiss in the Oberliga Nord-Ost. On August 25, 2014 Hutwelker was presented as interim coach of FC Carl Zeiss Jena for the dismissed Lothar Kurbjuweit . On December 10, 2014, he was relieved of his position as head coach of FC Carl Zeiss Jena, and will continue his contract in the junior division until 2016. In March 2015, the club announced that it had converted Hutwelker's contract into a contract as a scout.
On June 5, 2016, the SSVg Velbert announced his commitment as head coach for the top division season 2016/17. In 2018 he was introduced as a coach at FC Oberlausitz Neugersdorf in the Regionalliga Nordost . He was released early in February 2019.
In March 2019 Hutwelker returned to his hometown Wuppertal and became sports director of the regional league team Wuppertaler SV . From the beginning to the middle of October he also looked after the club on an interim basis as head coach before Alexander Voigt filled the office.
In the national team
Karsten Hutwelker never played for the senior national team, but played a game for the German U-21 national soccer team .
Private
In August 2006 tissue samples were taken as part of a dental treatment at Hutwelker. After evaluating the samples, he was diagnosed with bone cancer . "Huti" is now considered cured and on February 25, 2007 he celebrated his comeback in the 3-1 home win of FC Augsburg against the then leaders of the 2nd Bundesliga, Karlsruher SC .
Hutwelker lives in Cologne with his wife and two children.
