Markus Brzenska (born May 25, 1984 in Lünen ) is a soccer coach and former German soccer player . The central defender was most recently under contract with FC Viktoria Köln .
Career
Brzenska, the son of Polish immigrants from Bytom , started playing football at BV Lünen 05 . In the summer of 1993, at the age of nine, he moved to Borussia Dortmund 's youth team ; there he went through all youth teams and played in youth selections of the DFB .
Brzenska made his Bundesliga debut in the 2003/04 season in BVB's away game at Bayern Munich . After being sent off in the first half, his first mission was over. Under coach Bert van Marwijk , he became a regular player as a central defender with a strong header. In the second half of the 2005/06 season he ousted the then national player Christoph Metzelder from the first team of BVB. Brzenska was also able to draw attention to himself in the U-21 national team : he scored one goal in 15 games. In the 2006/07 season he impressed with constant performance in Dortmund's central defense. In the 2007/08 season he was used eleven times in the first 14 games, but subsequently he only made a brief appearance on matchday 20 and played primarily in the second team of BVB.
In the summer of 2008 Brzenska moved to MSV Duisburg in the second Bundesliga on loan for a year and made 33 games for MSV. From June 2009 he ran for Energie Cottbus , with whom he signed a contract until summer 2012. After establishing himself there as a regular player in central defense, he extended it early in April 2011 to June 2014. During the second division game of FC Energie Cottbus at MSV Duisburg on July 22, 2011 (2: 1), Brzenska's Achilles tendon tore . This was followed by five operations in two years in which he no longer played a game.
During the 2013/14 winter break, Brzenska was informed that the club was no longer planning with him. Previously, he had been called up to the second team several times in order to gain match practice there. He then agreed with the club to terminate his contract and moved to the Regionalliga West for FC Viktoria Köln , where he met his former Cottbus coach Claus-Dieter Wollitz . He made his debut for Viktoria on January 25, 2014 in a 2-2 home game against Rot-Weiss Essen . After missing promotion to the 3rd division in 2017, he ended his active career.
Brzenska declared in 2010 that she wanted to play for the Polish national team. The then Polish coach Franciszek Smuda wanted to test his performance and did not rule out an appointment.
For the 2016/17 season, Brzenska announced that he would join the regional division GS Cappenberg as an assistant coach not far from his home town of Lünen. There he would like to relieve the trainer Patrick Osmolski, whom he already knew from his youth at BV Lünen 05.
Since January 2018 Brzenska has been working as assistant trainer for Viktoria Köln. In May 2019 he was released together with head coach Patrick Glöckner . After promotion to the 3rd division , however, he was again placed as assistant coach to the new head coach Pavel Dotchev in June 2019 .
Private
In March 2008 Brzenska married his long-time girlfriend. He has two children.
