Jonas Carls (born March 25, 1997 in Haan ) is a German football player . The left defender has been under contract with Vitória Guimarães as a loan player from FC Schalke 04 in Portugal since July 2020 .
Career
Jonas Carls was accepted into the youth department of the Bundesliga club Bayer 04 Leverkusen at the age of eight and trained up to the U19. There he was used in the A and B junior Bundesliga and in the UEFA Youth League .
For the 2016/17 regional league season Carls moved to 1. FC Nürnberg , for whose regional league team he made his men's debut.
In the summer of 2017, FC Schalke 04 signed the defender, where he was used in the second team in the fifth-class Oberliga Westfalen . There he became a regular player straight away. In the 2018/19 season , in which the team played for promotion to the regional league, Carls was promoted to the professional team by interim coach Huub Stevens in April 2019 . He was one of six young players who moved into the team in the course of a weak season in which Schalke played to stay in class. After two matchdays in the squad, he made his debut at the age of 22 in the 2-5 home defeat against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim , where he was in the starting line-up. After the end of the 2018/19 Bundesliga season, the defender received a professional contract valid until 2022.
In January 2020, Carls was awarded to third division club FC Viktoria Köln after 12 first round appearances in the Regionalliga West until the end of the season. At Viktoria he was able to fight for a regular place on the left defensive flank, which he lost to Fabian Holthaus at the end of the second half . In spite of everything, the sports magazine kicker included him in the rankings of German football in the position of “outside lane defensive” . Carls managed to stay up with Cologne, but his team conceded 71 goals and thus most of the league.
For the 2020/21 season Carls was loaned to the Portuguese first division club Vitória Guimarães ; the lending contract contains a purchase option.
