Christoph John (soccer coach)

Christoph John (born December 24, 1958 in Heidenheim an der Brenz ) is a German football coach .

Christoph John grew up in Heidenheim. He was active for both Heidenheimer SB and the amateurs of 1. FC Köln , at that time under Erich Rutemöller . As a sports student at the Cologne Sports University, he worked for 1. FC Köln as a youth soccer coach, during these years he worked side by side with the coaches Christoph Daum , Roland Koch (1. FC Köln co-trainer) and Frank Schaefer, who were also active in the youth soccer field at the time (1. FC Köln U23). He coached 1. FC Köln from January 28 to February 14, 2002 as an interim solution before he was replaced by Friedhelm Funkel . He was unsuccessful with the professionals: there were 3 defeats in 3 championship games, and achieved the DFB Cup semi-finals for the billy goats with an away win at Hertha BSC (1: 2 afterwards). He trained the amateurs of 1. FC Köln until June 30, 2007, where he was primarily responsible for building up the youth of the entire club.

In May 2008, Christoph John was introduced as the new head coach of Wuppertaler SV Borussia . After a prolonged decline of the club in the last games of the first half of the 3rd division (2008/09 season), Christoph John was on leave on December 22, 2008 with immediate effect as coach of Wuppertaler SV. On October 3rd, 2009 Christoph John was introduced to Hertha BSC as assistant trainer of Friedhelm Funkel .

From July 2010, John was Funkels' assistant at VfL Bochum . After four defeats in a row and falling to 17th place in the 2nd Bundesliga , the coaching team was dismissed in September 2011. After Friedhelm Funkel took over the position of head coach at league competitor Alemannia Aachen just five days later , John followed him again as assistant coach. After five defeats in a row and seven points behind a non-relegation place, the duo in Aachen was on leave on April 1, 2012.
