The VfR 19 Limburg (officially: Association for Lawn Sports 1919 Limburg eV ) is a sports club from Limburg an der Lahn . The first soccer team played for three years in the then fourth-class Oberliga Hessen , while the first basketball team played for one year in the 2nd Bundesliga .

history

The club was founded on June 7, 1919 as Lawn Sport 19 Limburg and took its current name two years later. VfR 19 Limburg should not be confused with local rivals VfR 07 Limburg . The VfR 19 is located on the northern side of the Lahn, where it received the Lahnkampfbahn, which is still in operation today, as a sports facility in 1953.

Soccer

Until well into the 1970s, the 19s were in the shadow of the 07s in terms of sport. Supported by the trade unionist and later State Secretary Karl-Winfried Seif , he was promoted to the State League Hessen-Mitte in 1985 . Four years later, the team was runner-up behind SV Wehen . In 1994 the 19 national league champions were promoted to the Hesse league. The team stayed in the midfield of the league for two years. Financial problems meant that the team broke up before the 1996/97 season .

With only two wins and 114 goals conceded, VfR 19 was bottom of the table. This was followed by a voluntary withdrawal into the district league. In 1999 the department was even closed. It was not until 2007 that the 19s started again with a team that had to start in the C district league. Meanwhile promoted to the district league A, VfR 19 competed in the district league B in 2012. In the meantime, the club has played in the district league C for several years. With Michael Blättel , Norbert Hönnscheidt and Oliver Posniak , three ex-professionals played for the 19s.

basketball

The basketball players of VfR 19 Limburg have been competing under the name EVL Baskets Limburg since 2012 . In the 1997/98 season, VfR 19 played in the 2nd Bundesliga. After a sporting downturn, the team reached the fourth-class 1st Regionalliga Südwest in 2012 after four ascents in a row. During this promotion series, the team was two years without defeat. In June 2015 the basketball department spun off from VfR 19 Limburg and founded the Baskets Limburg association .
