The Gauliga Hessen 1939/40 was the seventh season of the Gauliga Hessen (from 1939 officially: "Area Class Hessen") in football. Due to the outbreak of the Second World War on September 1, 1939, the start of the season was initially suspended, locally, for example in Kassel and Hanau, local transition rounds were played. On December 10th, a gaume championship was started, with the league divided into two seasons of six teams each, so that the previous year's relegated Sport Kassel and KEWA Wachenbuchen were allowed to participate. The previous year sixth VfB Friedberg, however, withdrew his participation before the start of the round, TuRa Kassel moved up for him. With the relay winners CSC 03 and Hanau 93, two teams who had won the title several times before faced each other in the final of the Gaume Championship. Already after the 7: 2 in the first leg, the championship for defending champions CSC 03 Kassel seemed to be certain, but the 93 fought each other in the second leg and were only defeated by one goal after a 5: 1 win. In the subsequent final round of the German championship , the CSC 03 failed in the group stage. The last two of the squadrons north and south, TuRa Kassel and KEWA Wachenbuchen, had to relegate, and SG Hessen Hersfeld withdrew its Gauliga team for the 1940/41 round. Hermannia Kassel (north) and SpVgg 1910 Langenselbold (south) moved up as a climber .
