The competition is organized by the French rugby association, Fédération Française de Rugby , and replaced the former division B2 in 2000. 40 teams take part in four groups. Fédérale 2 and Fédérale 3 still exist below Fédérale 1. At the end of the season, two teams are promoted to Pro D2 , while eight are relegated to Fédérale 2.
format
- Preliminary round
There are ten teams in four groups. These meet in one home and one away game. The four best teams in each group qualify for the play-offs , the two worst teams are relegated.

In the round of 16, quarter-finals and semi-finals, there is a first leg and a second leg, in which the better points ratio is decisive for progress.
