Ian Gough (born November 10, 1976 in Panteg , Torfaen ) is a Welsh rugby union player who plays in the second row . He is active for the Ospreys and the Welsh national team .

Gough made his debut for Wales in 1998 in a 13-96 loss to South Africa , the biggest defeat in the country's history. Despite this setback, he stayed regularly in the national team until 2002. Due to injuries and poor performance, he lost his regular place and only came back in 2005, when Wales won the Grand Slam at the Six Nations in 2005 . He was playing for the Newport Gwent Dragons at the time , which he had been a member of since 2003. Previously he was active for the Newport RFC , through the restructuring of the club system in Wales, he was appointed to the cadre of the Dragons.

In the years that followed, Gough secured a place in the ranks of the Welsh national team and was one of the team's most experienced players. He was also nominated for the 2007 World Cup and was one of the better players of a disappointing team that was eliminated in the preliminary round. He then moved to the currently best Welsh team, the Ospreys. Under the new coach of the national team Warren Gatland , he is still part of the permanent staff. He was an important factor in winning the Grand Slam at the Six Nations in 2008 . In the decisive game against France he made his 50th appearance for Wales.
