Maurice Manificat (born April 4, 1986 in Sallanches , Haute-Savoie ) is a French cross-country skier .

Athletic career

Manificat rose within the French squad since 1997, before he finally became French champion in the Cadet category in 2002 . Even after that, his ascent continued, he was two-time French youth champion in 2004 after having previously achieved results in the Continental Cup. In his first participation in a junior world championship in 2004 he achieved 23rd place over 10 kilometers, and a year later he even achieved the bronze medal in the relay in Rovaniemi . Finally, he was accepted into France's B squad in 2006 and placed 10th in the pursuit at the Junior World Championships that same year.

After good results in the junior division, Manificat qualified himself for the first time in December 2006 for the World Cup , where he clearly missed the top 30 places. Then he started again in the Alpine Cup , where he was able to fight for places among the top ten several times. At the Universiade 2007 in Pragelato , he finished eighth in the pursuit competition. At the end of the season he took part in the U23 World Championships in Tarvisio , where he just missed a medal in fourth over 15 kilometers of freestyle. In the 2007/08 season Manificat was part of the French team's World Cup squad several times. In February 2008 he achieved World Cup points for the first time with a 24th place in Liberec , which was his best World Cup result that season. Over 30 kilometers of freestyle (mass start) he won the bronze medal at the U23 World Championships in Mals . At the season opener for the 2008/09 Cross-Country World Cup in Gällivare , he improved his best ever World Cup result by placing himself in 15th place. Manificat also showed a great improvement in the Alpencup and convinced with two wins and several podium placements. At the end of the season, he finished seventh overall. At the U23 World Championships in Le Praz-de-Lys-Sommand in 2009 , he won the gold medal over 15 kilometers of freestyle. Whereupon he was nominated for the Nordic World Ski Championships 2009 in Liberec. In his only start, he finished 47th in the pursuit competition. In Lahti , Finland , he achieved his best season result in the World Cup with 11th place. In the 2009/10 season he finally achieved the breakthrough into the extended world elite with third place over 15 kilometers freestyle in Davos, Switzerland , which he underpinned with victory in the pursuit race in Lahti. He finished the Tour de Ski 2009/10 in 19th place overall. At his first Olympic participation in Vancouver in 2010 , he finished 26th in the 30 km pursuit race, sixth in the 15 km freestyle and fourth in the relay. In March he won his first World Cup victory in the 30 km pursuit race in Lahti. At the 2010 Cross-Country World Cup Final , he won the 15 km freestyle race and finished the final in second place overall. In the World Cup overall he came fifth and in the distance ranking eighth.

After a weaker start in the 2010/11 season with placements in midfield and 17th place in the Tour de Ski 2010/11 , Manificat reached third place in the 20 km pursuit race in Rybinsk in February 2011 . His best placings at the Nordic World Ski Championships 2011 in Oslo were 11th place with the relay and sixth place over 15 km classic. In Lahti Manificat reached second place in the 20 km pursuit race in mid-March. He finished the 2010/11 World Cup finals in fifth place. At the Tour de Ski 2011/12 , he finished seventh overall. In December 2012 he won his second world cup race in Canmore in the skiathlon. His best results at the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2013 in Val di Fiemme were 18th place over 15 km freestyle and sixth place in the team sprint. At the beginning of the 2013/14 season he took fourth place at the Nordic Opening . In December 2013 he won the 30 km freestyle in Davos . He finished the Tour de Ski 2013/14 in 41st place overall. At the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi , he came in 43rd place in the 50 km mass start race and eighth place in the skiathlon. With the relay he won bronze. At the Tour de Ski 2015 , he finished 15th. In February 2015, he came second in the world cup race in Östersund in the 15 km freestyle. In the same month he won bronze with the relay and silver in the 15 km freestyle at the 2015 Nordic World Ski Championships in Falun . After finishing 14th at the Nordic Opening in Ruka at the beginning of the 2015/16 season, he finished in the top ten in the World Cup four times in a row, including a second place in the 30 km freestyle in Davos. At the Tour de Ski 2016 he came 13th. He achieved third place in Toblach over 10 km freestyle. At the following World Cup in Nové Město he won over 15 km freestyle and took third place in Falun over 10 km classic. At the end of the season he came fourth in the Ski Tour Canada . He finished third in the sprint in Canmore and ran a fastest time of 15 km on the final stage. He finished the season in fifth place in the overall World Cup and second in the Distance World Cup. At the beginning of the 2016/17 season he came in 34th place in the World Cup mini tour in Lillehammer . In December 2016 he finished third with the relay in La Clusaz . At the Tour de Ski 2016/17 he achieved five top ten placings, including second place over 10 km classic in Toblach and the fastest running time on the final stage, fourth place in the overall ranking. His best results at the Nordic World Ski Championships 2017 in Lahti were ninth place in the 50 km mass start race and seventh place in the relay. At the end of the season he came in 11th place at the World Cup finals in Québec and reached 13th place in the overall World Cup and in the Distance World Cup.

After eighth place in the Ruka Triple at the beginning of the 2017/18 season, Manificat won the 15 km freestyle in Davos and took second place over this distance in Toblach . He finished the Tour de Ski 2017/18 in 11th place. He ran the second fastest time on the final stage. At the highlight of the season, the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang , he won the bronze medal in the team sprint together with Richard Jouve and in the relay. In the skiathlon and over 15 km freestyle he was each fifth. At the end of the season he took 26th place at the World Cup finals in Falun and finally reached eighth place in the overall World Cup and fifth place in the Distance World Cup. At the beginning of the following season he ran in Davos to second place over 15 km freestyle and to 21st place in the Tour de Ski 2018/19 . In January 2019 he won his tenth individual World Cup victory in Ulricehamn over 15 km freestyle. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2019 in Seefeld in Tirol , he won the bronze medal with the relay. In the individual races he came in 32nd place in the 50 km mass start race and 25th place over 15 km classic. At the end of the season he achieved 34th place at the World Cup finals in Québec and reached 24th place in the overall World Cup and 15th place in the Distance World Cup. In the 2019/20 season he finished 34th in the Ruka Triple, 26th place in the Tour de Ski 2019/20 and 29th place in the ski tour and thus achieved 46th place in the overall World Cup.
