Sergei Tscherepanow ( Russian Сергей Черепанов ; born January 25, 1986 in Ridder ) is a Kazakh cross-country skier .

life and career

At the age of 15, Cherepanov took part in the 2001 World Junior Championships in Karpacz . As the youngest starter in the field of participants in the sprint competition, he finished 69th out of 95 starters. A year later he qualified for the quarterfinals in Schonach and was 22nd in the mass start competition over 30 kilometers classic and in the competition over 10 kilometers freestyle he convinced with places 23 and 28. He also improved his performance at the 2003 Junior World Championships in Sollefteå , where he achieved 13th place over 10 kilometers and was 15th over 30 kilometers freestyle (mass start), while he was 29th in the sprint. With the Kazakh relay, he finished fourth. This thankless place was kept by Tscherepanow at the 2004 Junior World Championships in Stryn, Norway over the distance of 10 kilometers of freestyle. In the competition over 30 kilometers classic (mass start) he again missed his first medal in sixth place and in the sprint he finished 29th. A surprise success, however, was the Kazakh relay, which just managed to prevail against Germany and Russia and became junior world champion. Also at the Junior World Championships in 2005 in Rovaniemi Cherepanov was denied his first individual medal with sixth place over 10 kilometers freestyle, while he was 50th in the pursuit race over two by ten kilometers. At his last participation in the Junior World Championships in 2006 in Kranj , Cherepanov's best result was 14th place in the pursuit competition, while he was 19th over ten kilometers in classical technique. Due to his success in the junior division, Cherepanov was nominated for the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin . However, he only started in the sprint competition, where he failed as 55th in the qualification.

At the age of 20 Tscherepanow started for the first time in the cross-country skiing world cup . On his first outing in Gällivare, Sweden, he came in 60th place over 10 kilometers of freestyle. But already in Kuusamo , Finland , he was 30th and won his first World Cup point. In Cogne, Italy, he achieved his best result of the season with 18th place over 15 kilometers. At the Universiade in Pragelato he won the bronze medal in the 10 kilometer freestyle competition. These results secured him the start at the Nordic World Ski Championships 2007 in Sapporo . Tscherepanow reached the quarter-finals in the sprint competition and finished 22nd and 23rd in the pursuit competition and over 15 kilometers of freestyle. Over these distances he reached places 31 and 12 at the U23 World Cup in Tarvisio . In the following year he just missed his first medal at the U23 World Championships as fourth in Mals over 15 kilometers classic and over 30 kilometers freestyle (mass start). Tscherepanow succeeded in advancing into the world elite at the world cup competition over 15 kilometers in Lahti , where he celebrated his first podium finish with third place behind Lukáš Bauer and René Sommerfeldt . At the end of the 2007/08 season he finished 69th in the overall World Cup. At the Junior World Championships 2009 in Le Praz-de-Lys-Sommand , Cherepanov prevailed in the sprint of the pursuit competition against all opponents and won the U23 world championship. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Liberec in 2009 he was able to convince in this competition and achieved twelfth place. Over 15 kilometers in the classic technique, he was 32nd, in the sprint 63rd and tenth in the Kazakh cross-country relay.

Cherepanov took part in the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver , where he competed in three competitions. His best placement there was 11th in the 4x10km relay, in the sprint he was 48th and in the pursuit race over 30 kilometers he came in 49th. At the Nordic World Ski Championships 2011 in Oslo , Norway , 11th place in the 30km pursuit race was his best individual result. In the mass start race over 50 kilometers he reached the 38th, in the pursuit race over 30 kilometers the 44th, in the sprint the 56th and in the relay race the 13th. At the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi , Russia , he was 48th in the skiathlon and 54th in the mass start race over 50 kilometers, while he finished 13th with the Kazakh relay. At the 2013 World Championships in Fiemme , Italy , he was only used in the season with which he was 13th. At the 2015 World Championships in Falun , Sweden , he started again in individual competitions and was 44th in the mass start race over 50 kilometers, 56th over 15 kilometers in free technique and 58th in the sprint.

In the World Cup, Cherepanov was last used on December 20, 2015 in Toblach, Italy, but when he was disqualified in the race over 15 kilometers in the classic technique. Since then he has only competed in lower class races internationally.
