Ridder ( Kazakh and Russian Риддер ) is a mining town in northeast Kazakhstan . It is located in the East Kazakhstan region , not far from the Russian border.
geography
Ridder is located northeast of the regional capital Öskemen . Its surroundings are shaped by the foothills of the Altai . In the southeast the mountains of the Ivanov ridge extend , in the northwest those of the Uba ridge .
population
Ridder has a population of 47,288 (2020). In 1991 the city still had 69,500 inhabitants, but the emigration, especially of the Russian and German population, which began after the collapse of the Soviet Union , caused the number to decline sharply. In addition to the actual city, the urban district of Ridder also includes an urban settlement and 18 villages, with a total population of 56,455 (2020).
The city is still strongly influenced by Russian people, 88.1% of the population are Russians , 6.1% Kazakhs , 1.6% Germans , 1.3% Ukrainians , 1.1% Tatars , 0.4% Belarusians as well 1.4% residents of other nationalities. In addition to emigration, the natural population development is also negative, with 10.3 births and 19.5 deaths per 1000 inhabitants. (Data for 2003)

history
The city was founded in 1786. Ridder received city rights in 1934. Until 1941 it had the current name, named after Philipp Ridder (1761-1838), who discovered the local ore deposits. In 1941 Ridder was renamed Leninogorsk , the city carried this name until 2002, when the official renaming was decided. In March 2013, the World Ski Orienteering Championships took place in the Ridder area .
In Ridder there was a prisoner of war camp 347 , Leninogorsk , for German prisoners of war of the Second World War .
Attractions
A local museum and a botanical garden (Алтайский ботанический сад / Altaiski Botanitscheski Sad ) can be visited in Ridder .
economy
Ridder is a center for mining and non-ferrous metal processing. The Kazzinc concern has an ore processing plant here as well as an ore processing plant; he also operates several opencast mines in the vicinity of the city. There are woodworking and clothing factories, as well as the food industry and mechanical engineering.

The European route 40 leads from Ridder to Calais in France . With a length of more than 8,000 kilometers, it is the longest European road .
