Kurchatov

Kurchatov ( Kazakh and Russian Курчатов ) is a city in Kazakhstan with 12,317 inhabitants (2020). It is located in the East Kazakhstan region on the banks of the Irtysh River , predominantly on the left bank, southwest of the river.

Geography, traffic

The strongly meandering Irtysh River comes from China, which is about 400 km south-east, and on this stretch it flows through Lake Saissan, which is over 100 km long . Irtysh flows further to NNW and reaches Russia 400 km as the crow flies. Russian territory is also 100 km east of Kurchatov and at this distance also accompanies the Irtysh River, which flows 350 km as the crow flies north-northwest of the city to Russia.

On the left bank of the Irtysh river runs the road R-174, which takes 143 km to reach Semei, formerly Semipalatinsk, on the right bank. The railway takes a similar route. There is an airport in Semei.

There is little vegetation in the area, most of it near the river.

history

As a closed city, Kurchatov had the addresses Semipalatinsk-21 and Moscow-400.

The city was named after the physicist Igor Wassiljewitsch Kurtschatow .

The place was granted city rights in 1948 and was previously a closed city and the administrative center of the former nuclear weapons test site Semipalatinsk , where almost 500 above and underground atomic bomb tests took place in 1949–1989.

population

Of the approximately 12,000 inhabitants, around 54% are Russians, 39% Kazakhs, 2% Ukrainians, 1.4% German and 3.6% of other nationalities.
