The Zaysan (also Sajsansee or Zajsansee called; Kazakh көлі Зайсан ; Russian озеро Зайсан ) is a lake in East Kazakhstan ( Asia ).
The originally 1810 km² still water , which is now usually flooded by the water of the Buchtarma reservoir , is located near the town of Saissan on the Irtysh , which is its main tributary. It is located south-southwest of the Russian Altai and north of the Tarbagatai Mountains at 420 m .
The Saissansee is 105 km long, 22 to 48 km wide and a maximum of 15 m deep, but has been flooded by 8 m since 1960 by the damming of the Irtysh river in the Buchtarma reservoir - at least when it is fully dammed. The fish-rich lake or the current reservoir is usually frozen over from the beginning of November to the end of April.
According to Dorfman, Lake Zaysan is the oldest lake in the world. It has existed since the Cretaceous with an estimated age of around 70 million years.
